Is Advanced Task Killer still relevant?

My question is whether or not Advanced Task Killer still relevant in today's Android platform? Is it useful on the Droid Charge? Or is it better to leave the management of tasks up to the OS?

Imo, leave it to the os management. That being said, the built in real killer works well in a pinch.

IMO, the app killers slow you way down. I will try to speak in somewhat laypeople terms. Android (Froyo and Beyond) manages memory (Think of this as your plate) a little different. Whatever memory you use is prioritized based on a weighting scale, some things like the Android OS itself is heavily weighted as a priority and thus when the plate gets full when running a bunch of apps something has to be pushed off the plate. The Android OS is a priority critical, weighted program, so it will not shut down to make room... But something like say Angry Birds or Rock Band will be shoved right off the plate for you to fire up say Tango to do a video chat. My 2 cents, Lookout is not needed either if you get your stuff off of the Android Market and you only open stuff that you know the source. Hope this analogy helps...

Thanks for the technical explanation of the issue. Yep, I understood every bit of it. Wish I could change that "app timeout" time.

You know...
"But even with hitting home, Android will eventually kill it once it

The devs of these task killer apps must be all sitting around, biting their fingernails as more and more laypeople realize you DON'T need to kill tasks on Android.

It's a dying app for sure. All it takes is a litte education on how Android, particularly the newer (i.e. 2.3.4) versions handle memory.

Task killers, even the 'free' ones, are a waste of space and time. Android handles itself just fine, thank you very much.

I agree with everything the first guy said except you do need lookout. While you may not need antivirus lookout lets you do a couple of great things.

Scream. From any computer you can activate scream which is an alarm. Say you put the phone on silent and now can't find it. Scream sets volume to high then screams so you can locate it.

Lock, locate, and clean. If your phones stolen you can remotely lock it, track it, and delete all your personal info, contacts, photos, and files. Think of it as lowjack on roids. Didn't have your gps on when it was stolen? Doesn't matter lookout starts your gps remotely.

Plus it uses less than .5% of the battery and like .2% of the memory.

Good morning -

In my opinion and experience ATK is still relevant and useful if you are running a lot of apps and want a better option for Android. If you set up the do not kill list properly, ATK makes the effort of closing apps very efficient (even if Android can do it without ATK). Like any 3rd party app, it isn't for everyone, but it simplifies the process of closing apps (with both closing regular and auto-kill options in my my case). I use it throughout the day.

Good luck!
