Is anyone considering switching providers for the droid?

I'm on Orange UK and my contract ends this Friday. I'm gonna hold out for the Droid to come to UK or something equal or better. It seems like all the android phones over here are lacking a full qwerty which I consider a must. Does anyone know if and when there are any plans to release the Droid in the UK? I've been with Orange for 11 years but will switch for this bad boy.

So to summarise, YES I'll switch networks for the Droid.
Well FCC stuff has leaked for the Droid with European 3G bands so I would be pretty sure that it is coming. I think it will be in early 2010, but maybe you will be lucky and get it around December.

EDIT: Definitely coming to GSM, and since VZW has exclusivity in the states then this if for you!

You rock fella!

OK, did I see pinch zoom? What kind of SIM was that? I think I saw 2 seperate SIM slots on the phone. Does that suggest one for CDMA and one for GSM perhaps?

Appreciate the post, keep anything along these lines comin, us small fry across the pond need some decent kit!! Need to smash the iphone users in the face with this.... ;-)

WOW, I'm surprised so many are saying they're dropping the IPhone for the droid so quickly, and its not even out out.

Don't get me wrong, I think this phone may finally be the one that redefines the smartphone. I might be taking off work morning of Nov 6th to get my Droid.

I'm already on Verizon...

You seems like a good person to ask this question since you are a Verizon customer.

I'm a Sprint customer on the Everything Data 450 plan. This plan includes 450 voice minutes, unlimited data, unlimited texting, and Sprint Nav.

On Verizon what will a matching plan cost?

I am already a Verizon customer and the only reason I don't own an iphone is because I didn't want to switch providers. Verizon has by far the best customer service and coverage area. I am glad I held out, hoping for Apple to make a deal with Verizon, but now that the Droid is coming, I'm happy as a little lark! The bottom line is, if you are happy with your cell phone carrier, don't switch just for the latest gadget. Technology moves so fast that eventually your favorite carrier will probably have the phone you'd die for!

I'm on Verizon's Premium(everything) and 450 minutes plan, its $79.99.

I saw the pinch zoom also BGR did not say it had multi touch.

The second slot next to the SIM is the Micro SD slot.

I asked a similar question in another post about the pricing and how much my plan would run and I was told that you can't get that premium 79.99 plan for this phone, you have to get one of the data plans.

As far as navigation, looks like we won't have to pay anything for that now with Google nav.

I just called verizon and for a similar plan the guy told me it would cost 89.99.

That includes 450 minutes, unlimited web and email (not exchange), and unlimited text. It didn't include nav, but you don't need that now with Google nav. You can't do friends and family on the 450 plan, though.

what I don't get is why there is a separate data plan if you want exchange support. Doesn't Android 2.0 have native exchange support? Would that not make this fall under the umbrella of Verizon's claim that they won't restrict native google features or charge extra for them?

The Droid has native exchange support. Verizon likes to try and hit you with $45 instead of $30 for corporate e-mail. But it should not be an issue.

Email, not exchange? Native exchange support

May I interject what I'm sure is a dumb question here .... What IS "exchange" and why does it matter to the smartphone user?

Again, excuse my ignore .... but there are folks like me who are about to leap into the smartphone universe and still have a learning curve.

Thanks!

I abandoned my family line on Verizon for the 3GS.

The droid does look good enough for me to see how much it would cost me monthly to go back to Verizon. It does look good. BUT... this is all new tech. The Droid is new. 2.0 is new. There will be bugs. And what will the battery life be? What kind of growth will we see with the Android market? Android is making big strides in polishing the OS, but I'm not going to just mindlessly switch without looking further into this. Besides, there is a rumor that the Sony Erriccson might make an announcement soon about its android phone and its UI, rachel.

Still love my 3gs and am waiting on the sidelines. I just HATE the fact that I would have to pay a termination fee to switch carriers. This will do well, not iPhone well, but it will sell well.

exchange or microsoft exchange server is basically microsoft's email protocol/system. exchange support is important to people because a lot of people's work email is handled via exchange and accessed with outlook. gmail and other email clients use the POP email protocol for the most part (i believe) so while a smart phone will usually support POP/IMAP email accounts that doesn't mean it supports exhange as they are unrelated.

Yeah, I saw properly when I watched it again (duh!)

IIRC BGR said specifically that it didn't have pinch zoom on their original model so this must be something Verizon/Motorola added later.

Had emails back from Motorola re: Droid release in the UK and they just say they can't give any info and to keep an eye on hellomoto.com. Meh!

I'll be dropping from the 450 minute Premium Plan for $79.99, down to the "Connect" 450 minute plan for $69.99, because with the free Google Maps/turn-by-turn, I don't need to have the VZ-Navigator anymore, yeah!!!! You also lose V-Cast by dropping the Premium, but I never used it anyway, and I don't think Droid supports V-Cast. But, its got YouTube :-)

My question is do we have to switch carriers? (Assuming you can wait a month or two...)

Is there any official confirmation that Verizon has an exclusive contract for the Droid? There's already reports of the GSM version in the works. Motorola DROID spotted in fine GSM form (video)

History shows us that Motorola did a good job pimping the Razr, would it be completely impossible to expect they'd want to sell as many units to as many carriers?

Wouldn't it only be a matter of software settings to make the FCC approved VZW Droid work on Sprint's network?

Hi guys
I'm new to switch providers and I want to order my Droid online because of the free activation and the instant rebate , the one question I have is how to port my number and cancel my AT&T account without staying without a service for couple of days

Verizon is the Droid's exclusive US distributor. The GSM model is for other countries.

Pricing and Availability:

DROID by Motorola will be available in the United States exclusively at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online on Friday, Nov. 6, for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement after a $100 mail-in rebate...

Hello Humans: Droid By Motorola Arrives Next Week

You're probably right, but that doesn't really state VZW is the exclusive carrier for the Droid. Technically it just says its the only place you can get it Nov 6. Even if it is exclusive, how long? The EU carriers seem to release phones with much shorter exclusive periods.

If it works anything like AT&T has.. they have no way of stopping you from using exchange e-mail on the unlimited e-mail and web plan.. it is just a way for them to charge corporate customers more money.

I'll be leaving AT&T and my iPhone 3G for this phone. Apparently at&t contracts started or renewed after may 25th, 2008 have a pro-rated ETF.. $5 off for every full month of service completed.. so at 15 months I'd be down to a $100 + tax ETF.

Already on Verizon (Alltel for 6 years before Verizon bought Alltel out). But if I wasn't on Verizon, I'd switch/sell/pay ETF for the Droid. Without a doubt. This phone is just incredible. My girlfriend and I are both upgrading to the Droid!

Also already on VZW - my university is a bit out in the sticks, and coverage there is best achieved by VZW (which also happens to give a discount for said U's faculty and staff) so it's a win-win situation for me.

And I can't beat the fact that (according to what I have read so far) that this is the first phone the VZW is leaving intact, not re-branding the OS to add all their carrier-specific junk. That, *alone* makes it more than worth it for me....If I were on a different carrier I'd seriously consider switching just for this very reason....
