Is anyone else completely disinterested in the Atrix now?

one thing I feel like is a glossed over issue, and a long standing problem with android is: battery life.

this phone has the highest spec'd stock battery for android that I'm aware of, and that is a very very good thing. you can talk "rooting" and "sideloading" all you want, but i want a smartphone to do one thing, keep.me.connected.

the inspire and thunderbolt are both attractive, but if they follow htc's android lineage then that means 1 charge=1 day of average use.

"but you can modify..." "but you can download..." "but you can carry a second..." but you can buy a larger capacity..."

i say shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......

you can do all that with this phone too. being a slave to the charger may not be a problem (read also: annoying, inconvenient) 95% of the time, but that 5% can be a very important 5%.

I'm still interested in the Atrix. The phone's specs are more than what I need. Even if the current OS and Apps don't fully utilize the dual core processor. Future Android OS and Apps will. I don't see myself out growing this phone anytime soon.

I agree about the battery is important. What good is a phone with a dead battery.

I suspect one of two things (or both) will happen with the docks.

1. at&t, having taken a stab at what the market will bear, will see the lackluster sales and hear the customer complaints and lower the price of the docks to something people can stomach.

2. The docs are probably very simple devices with little in the way of electronics, and probably easy enough to clone. Look for third party manufacturers to try the market with some knock-offs. China's low volume, low-cost manufacturing has made it feasible for 3rd parties to try stuff like this even when the market is not proven.

I haven't read every post in this thread, but it really confuses me.
If the two docks were never even created, it would still be a great phone for $199 on contract. That's what I paid for my Captivate seven months ago and this phone is, literally, twice the power (CPU and RAM). Not to mention the fact that Motorola has shown that they can actually write decent software for Android devices, unlike Samsung.

The way I see it, BOTH docks are overpriced but I'm not forced to buy them. Without them, I'm still happy paying the $199 for the phone. Motorola/at&t has given me additional options with the docks, but I won't be buying them. End of story. The end. Have a nice day.
I whole heartedly agree with you and the other members that voiced this here. I’m just repeating what you all have said but I want to voice my opinion. I sooooo don't understand the bashing with the Atrix :/ I mean yeah, the docks are 100000000000% overprice. I know that the pricing is very VERY disappointing but I think the people that are basing their buying decision solely on the laptop dock are very narrow sighted. I find the laptop dock very gimmicky to say the lease. Something nice to have, show off and brag about. It runs off the phone with a slightly different UI that's not even a full operating system. Unless I’m incorrect, it cannot do anything that a normal laptop can do and for most people will not replace their laptop. It is nothing but an overpriced accessory, plain and simple. I'd understand if it 'dual' boots Window 7 and Android but that's another topic altogether.

To say you're not buying a phone because of a DOCK is ridiculous in my perspective. Seriously, are you getting a phone or a ‘laptop'? I want a phone, and the Atrix has specs worth drooling after. So to those people that are not getting the Atrix because of the overprice dock…the other phone you are getting now has a much cheaper dock I’m assuming since this IS your deciding criteria it seems  AT&T’s pricing of the Atrix at $200 is comparable to all high end Android phones: all SGS, Evo, Droid X, Droid 2 etc etc etc.

Not really! Bell is getting it in Canada. So I'm not too worried about plans or crap software
I’m waiting for the Bell version and getting it off contract and hopefully unlock. Hopefully the off contract price is not ridiculous.

Agreed, though most of use are weighing all of the options and not basing it on this one thing.

Unless I’m incorrect, it cannot do anything that a normal laptop can['t] do and for most people will not replace their laptop.
The full screen and live integration with your Android phone is nice but we'll see what the reviews have to say about that. I, for one don't have a laptop and I really don't like them that much but I was considering getting this dock (which would have been even more enticing if it included an integrated webcam for video chat) TBQH, I think they laptop dock is really for business users that will use the citrix features.

Seriously, are you getting a phone or a ‘laptop'?

The problem lies in that without the docking accesories the Atrix is just another phone, yes one with 1 GHZ dual core, 1GB RAM and a fingerprint reader, but just another Android phone (a 2.2 version at that)...and its potentially been locked up by AT&T. (yes I realize itll get hacked)

But with other phones coming out with similar specs (Pyramid? [1.2Ghz, 1GB]) that might not be locked down(thanks HTC), why go with this phone without the docks? Those are the reasons I think that people are still looking around. MWC is also coming up next week.

Yes that is true, but when the argument is the dock is too expensive, and thus the phone is 'crap' (...or like 'any' Android phone out now). It's like the Atrix is NOTHING without its dock, which I will have to disagree with. Unless the bootloader is 100% lock and for you that is your reason for not choosing the Atrix, I understand that. THAT is my main reason I will go with the Nexus S over the Atrix. But a lot of complaints aren't for this, it's because of the dock is too overpriced. Those that are rooters/romers, the Atrix isn't even a selection/choice for them because they don't want any limitation to the modding they can do with their phone. I get why people from other carrier won't be jumping. The dock gave the Atrix a (perceived) slight edge over what their carrier is and will be offering. I just don't get the bad mouthing from AT&T's customers.

Other than that, spec wise, the Atrix IS the best phone in the market when it's released. It will be able to COMPETE with all the power house of phones this year. Phones that will come out MONTHS after it. So if I want a great phone that I can get in a couple of weeks, why shouldn't I? So, I should just wait for Q2 (which could be as late as June) for a phone with SIMILAR specs? Spec wise, this year, I don't believe the spec can get much better than what the Atrix is offering. I mean the next game changer are chips like the Tegra 3 and co (sorry don't remember the other ones) but they won't be out until 2012. Seriously, what IS the Atrix as a phone really missing that is making you consider?

And I think razholio has a point:
. The docs are probably very simple devices with little in the way of electronics, and probably easy enough to clone. Look for third party manufacturers to try the market with some knock-offs. There will ALWAYS be a 3rd party option that you can buy.

Also, if you don't buy the dock, guess what? AT&T will have a large inventory of useless Atrix laptop docks sitting in its warehouse. In a couple of months, guess what? They will slash the price of the dock to get rid of the stock. Inventory is expensive, especially when the inventory is *thinks* takes up 5-10x more space than the phone.

I've lost a bit of interest since I've heard the "4G" speeds being reported in reviews. Should this turn me away? Should I wait for the LTE BIONIC? HELP!!!

take a deep breathe....in....and out....

ahhhh.

now, if you're on the fence and can't decide on your own then wait for both to be out and make an informed decision yourself. if "4g" data speeds are important to you, i'd wait until you hear about people in your area using them. nyc's att data ( where many of the reviews are made) is notoriously slow. different markets will yield different results (on diferent days and times even, but don't worry about that...you may have a stroke!)

This is what I will end up doing. I spent most my time in Los Angels and San Diego. LA doesn't have the best speeds (service for me) but San Diego is pretty good. It just needs to be faster than my iPhone 4.

Same with me. I have an iPhone 3G now which has the standard version of 3G (HSDPA) and in southeast Michigan I get about 1MBs down and around 0.3MBs up. But I make the most of it using Opera Mini which supposedly compresses pages before loading them. So for me, if I get at least 2MBs down on the Atrix it will be a major improvement. I'll just try one out in at At&t store when they're available and see what the speed is like.

What are you talking about?

SD cards are called Memory cards. I went ahead and differentiated them both by calling one 1GB of RAM (Random Access Memory).

What I meant to say was that it's a shame that it's become acceptable to use the words "memory" and "storage" interchangeably. The phone has 1 GB of memory and can be upgraded to 48 GB of storage.

To all you "oh should I wait, should I sit on the fence, what if I buy this phone and 2 weeks later something better gets released"... 4G, 3G s*** I can't stand it!! CHILL OUT!! This has been going on for the better part of 25 + years!! in one form or another. I've dealt with token ring, ethernet, 10MB, 100mb 1GB.... come on... the questions are always the same..

When the 'technology train' pulls into the station.... is it going to 'your destination'? if not.. go buy another another cup of coffee & wait for then next one! Jeez I waited & waited to buy a MacBook... if I had swallowed all the marketing hype, reviews, opinions, best guesses... I'd still be waiting!! This is bleeding edge guys.... If your not prepared to put up with it, stand down. This 3G Vs. 4G is out of control in every forum I've visited. Look at the BIG picture.. 4G is in it's infancy, like it or lump it! that's the truth. Whatever phone hits the market right now sporting a "4G" sticker is maybe half in & half out of the equation... LTE Blah Blah... Right now as an AT&T iPhone 4 user I'm as pissed as the rest of you, I've had every iteration of the iPhone since day 1, Dropped calls -all OF THEM!! prior to that I've had pretty much every 'windows mobile, CE whatever you want to call it since 1994! People used to laugh at me because I had the 1st T-Mobile XDA, they'd all whip out there Motorola V this & that & proceed to tell me how PDAs & Cell phones would NEVER work together! How Text Messaging was just a 'fad'. This Motorola Atrix is the 1st device Motorola has brought to market that could really challenge the iPhone 4 AND in my opinion make a dent in Apple's sales. If I was 'anybody' at Motorola right now, I'd be making the marketing/sales people at AT&T's life a living 'HELL'!! for trying to justify a battery, keyboard & Screen as being equal to or better than ANY net book currently available today. Can you imagine this: - Motorola's had to make a huge investment in manufacturing this dock, they've got to be committed to building x number of these things regardless, otherwise they'd lose money no matter what... so, that being said, allowing AT&T to set the price to be comparable to a net book in time, will be without doubt detrimental to their investment & ultimately their bottom line - Profit.. My guess is at some point Motorola will have to start moving this product, which means to me that they will start selling them through other channels, they have to unless they can convince AT&T to drop the price because my guess is there will be far more of these device gathering dust in a warehouse than will be put to the use for which they were designed. Peace Y'all

I wouldn't use the iPhone 3G as a comparison. From my experience it is mostly limited by the processor. In areas where my brothers 3G would get 2Mbps, I would get 3.5-4Mbps on my iPhone 4.

I was pretty sure (along with the processor upgrade of course) that the iPhone 4 and 3Gs had a faster type of 3G than the iPhone 3G. But I can't seem to find any info about this now so I might be mistaken. But a 620 MHz processor stock under clocked to 412 MHz definitely isn't enough for this phone...

$499 US, shouldn't be more than $549 CAD. Sounds about right with all other smartphone prices except Galaxy S and the iPhone I guess.
I hope that's the case. I talked to a Bell's rep and was told that it'll cost me $70 to get the unlock code.

They do, but the iPhone 4 also supports HSUPA which actually improves download speeds too. The faster chipset helps too.
