Is GMAIL id required for Android?

Is it necessary to have a Google ID or Gmail ID in order to have an Android phone?

Not for all devices. For example I don't need to enable my Gmail if I don't want to.

What device do you have?

I'm not sure if it is required but I would wonder why you wouldn't want to use one? google app integration is one of the main reasons to get an android phone.
 
Wondering why someone would not want to have a Google account seems to be a "dangerous" topic around here. Please don't start no flamewars over this.

With Android, a Google account is rather fundamental and although the OS can work without one, it is going to be a very obviously crippled experience for you. :o

Oh BTW -- you don't necessarily need a GMail id, you can also use a Google Apps ID.

Right everyone, we all know that Google offers the best email and search services, as well as the best web browser and mobile OS, so there's no sense in starting any debates over it. ;)
 
Thanks for the input...here's why I was asking. My wife and I currently use blackberries. The most important feature of a smartphone to me is the PIM data. I left my old company a few years back and gave up the corporate enterprise server connection to my blackberry. When I switched to the BB from WinMo...I tested Gmail, Yahoo, and MSN. Yahoo seemed to work the best with Blackberry. At that time...almost 3 years ago...it had instant delivery with 2-way read/write sync and I was able to tether the device to their desktop app and sync contacts, notes, tasks and calendar.

Mostly because of my Obsessive Compulsive tendencies, I made her switch from using Gmail to using Yahoo.

Since that time Gmail has become light-years better than where it was in regards to syncing with the BB.

So now fast forward a few years and we are deciding to get the Incredible or N1 when it launches and give Android a go. I fear that the things that I value most out of the device will work best with Gmail, and my wife will think I am completely crazy for suggesting that she start using Gmail again. So that's why I am looking to see how well the device will play with Yahoo.

Direct sync to local outlook is poorly supported by only a few apps if you wish to avoid the cloud sync. A severe weakness for business users that want to have a go and require a local sync.
