Root Is it Android ICS or the Motion that is bothering me?

what kind of phone did you have that got you longer battery life and what kind of stuff were you doing with it?....

As I mentioned previously, I had the Optimus M and the Optimus M+. I'd use it for phone calls, text messaging, web browsing, navigation, etc. Functions like navigation would train the battery the fastest, so I couldn't get more than a couple days with those running. But other than that, the Optimus M gave me four to five days and the Optimus M+ gave me three to four days. I don't play any games on my phones, so that helps a lot.

Also, it's not just about usage. It's also about settings. I always have mobile data turned off when I'm not using the phone. I have all bloatware removed. I have all running processes that I don't use frozen (i.e., software update). My screen brightness is at minimum.

And although a lot of people advice against it, I have a task manager. I saw my battery on my Optimus M improve dramatically after installing a task manager to shut down apps after using them. I've been using one ever since then on my successive phones.

I know I don't use my smartphone like others who like to have constant updates and notifications throughout the day or having running widgets. I don't need any of that stuff going on. I'd rather have longer battery life.

That's cool, you are using your phone mostly as a phone it seems. ;) Nah I just kidding. What task manager app do you use? I'm pretty new to smartphones (this is my first one) so I take any info anyone has. :)

Edit: I don't mind trying task managers. If it works then you will get more battery life, if it doesn't work then uninstall it.

When I was on Froyo and Gingerbread, I liked Advanced Task Killer (by ReChild) or Advanced Task Manager (by Infolife). On ICS and Jelly Bean, I've been using Gemini App Manager (by Seasmind).

Even with task managers, settings will affect battery life. I don't have auto-kill on. I close out apps manually by going into the app and hitting one-click-kill.

and Mr Amazing Dave...what were you doing with your OM?...

because i seriously would like to know how to get multiple days out of a smartphone while using it as a smartphone

in fact MrAmazingDave, give me a rundown of a typical days use with your phone, just so we can determine what it is you do to get such a long life out of your battery...
My Optimus M carried many duties. It was my digital pocketknife, always holstered right next to my leatherman on my belt.

Daily duties for my Optimus M would be to wake up, and stream Pandora for a few hours through an external speaker until I got up to really start my day. With Pandora still playing through a speaker on my bicycle, I would fire up my TetherGPS app and Wireless Tether for Root to share GPS and data with my NookColor, which would be in my backpack, linked to the Optimus wirelessly, tracking my mileage and paths that I would take, and would continue to do so for the duration of 20-30 miles, or about one to two hours.

In the meantime, I might have made a handful of stops to check text messages and my Facebook (I'm so vain... haha) and since that would all be over Metro 1x (maybe catch a good 3G signal if I was lucky) it would all take way longer than it should.

If I happened to stop somewhere where I could catch some WiFi, I would likely stop for a few minutes and browse the web, and this would be done on the phone if the tablet was still in the backpack tracking.

Fruit Ninja and Cut the Rope would occupy time when no internet was available, and since I'm on Metro, that would be often.

Once home, I might run Viggle for a bit if I watched TV, or maybe just fire up Pandora again and relax since I'm not much for today's televised content. Browse some more Facebook, browse some more Android Forums :), this and that....

I would stop places and scan QRs or MS Tags, then wait painfully for 5 minutes as the associated page would load over Metro's network.

I might take pictures of strange shit I'd see on my bike, and upload it to Facebook, or play around with the pic in Snapbucket.

I could use my Optimus all day, and still have a 20-30% battery come quittin' time.

I didn't claim I could get multiple days from my Optimus M. With a bigger battery and less power draw, it just lasted a bit longer than the Motion 4G. If I use my Motion as much as my Optimus, which I do, I have to top up the battery mid-day if I want it to go the distance.

If I stream Netflix, all bets are off.

I need to correct something I posted. I had my numbers mixed up. My Motion has a 1.7Ah battery and the Optimus a 1.5. So the Motion has the higher capacity.

Well you two are extreme rarities....

please browse through forums looking at battery life for other phones. So you can see why I am so alarmed at your claims. I am not trying to be an @$$hole or anything, I just find it really hard to believe, figuring even the advertisements for the RAZR MAXX (which as we all know has the longest battery life of any Android phone) say that it will last all day which < or = 12 hours

I do not know how or why you got such great battery life out of those two crappy phones but you should not have, it literally defies all logic.

As for this phone, if you use it normally, you should be getting at least 10 hours out of it. If you are not getting that much out of it then you might have a defective battery.

While we're talking about batteries and power, does it harm to stay plugged in for prolonged periods or should I say does it matter? I have a horrible habit of staying plugged into the wall whenever possible and only just now thought to ask about the possible repercussions of doing so...

If I don't stay plugged in, my battery drains in less than eight hours, but I really USE my $55 plan heavily. Those b@tches are gonna take my money, I'm gonna damn well enjoy using every bit that I pay for!

There are much newer threads about battery life that you could have asked this in.
The battery will automatically stop taking in power when its full to prevent overcharging

That's the thing about android, you have the power to do anything you want with your phone. Just get into it, customization is everything.

I would also like to know the answer to this? I hear it's bad to over charge and use your phone while it's charging and doing so will affect battery life in the future
