Is it me or does the screen lack punch?

Newbie
No question the Droid has awesome resolution, but I have noticed that the screen lacks the bright punch of the Eris or iPhone. I have checked this at several Verizon stores and on the You tube videos that compare phones and features.The Droid shows up rather bland on the videos versus the others. My phone arrives tomorrow or Tuesday but I thought someone else might have a reasonable response to this. Comments welcome. Thanks
 
I think that my Droid screen is adequately "punchy." It is enough to make this an issue I don't really notice or care about.

There will always be something better. We all need to be satisfied with our purchase and the research that went into it.
 
Yes - agreed. I custom edit all of my own background images, and always increase color saturation and play with brightness/contrast to get the right look. Maybe that's why I tend to not notice this as a problem.

I think you may have looked at DROIDs that had their brightness turned off or close to all the way down. The brighter you make the DROID's display, the punchier and/or more vivid it becomes.

My drummer has the iPhone 3GS. We called up the same video, he took one look at my screen and said, "Wow!". That's all I'm going to say about that. ;) (Not to mention that my video loaded in half the time that his did. :D )

I have a custom background as well. It's a 10x10 BLACK pic. :D How long do you guys sit and stare at your wallpaper anyway. :confused: I actually run apps with my DROID. Weird, I know. :p
 
I have played with brightmess on the demo phones and noticed no contrast adjustment. Is there one? The phone is awesome overall- however, having used my daughters Eris I do see a difference in overall brightness and punch (resolution aside).
 
I run my DROID with the brightness OFF, that's all the way DOWN and automatic brightness OFF. Only in a few very sunny situations did I feel the need to turn it up to about 50%. This thing is glaringly BRIGHT. No contrast adjustment, but the contrast is amazing already.

Sounds like you might just want to buy an Eris or iPhone. And that's OK. If they float your boat, don't fight it.

I do have to admit one thing. I've worked around sound all my life. And "punch" is often used to describe sound. I've also been a geek for over 25 years. This is the first time I've ever heard the word "punch" being used to describe a screen's display. :confused:
 
Yea, I have never heard punch used to describe a screen, but anyway I have a iPhone 3G and next to my Droid it looks bland, not nearly as sharp. I've never seen a Eris besides at BB but I have used a Hero (the original) and the screen was more or less the same as my Droid, besides the lower resolution. The only screens I have ever seen that really pop are OLED/AMOLED's but the iPhone definitely doesn't have one nor does the Eris.
 
Pop, punch....tomato, tomato......You guys got my drift and thanks for the reply. Maybe some of the demo phones are off a bit. My Droid should arrive today so I will do a direct comparison. Regarding the Eris- Yes it's awesome but if I wanted to buy one I would have. I was just making an observation since I have one in the house.

I have the ipod touch and the droid and I think the Droid has a much better screen, very vibrant. With that being said, i have the brightness turned way down and still think it looks great. You just have to get used to seeing it a bit darker.
 
I don't know what screen you've been using, but I can't even keep my brightness above 60 because of the brightness and clarity of the screen. Colors are plenty vibrant and "punchy" and the resolution makes everything clear as glass. I don't know how much more you could ask for. It's way, way better looking than an iPhone screen if you look at them side by side.
 
I think the droid has a fantastic screen... but I do wonder if some droids have different screens than others. I know for laptops there are many different screens from different manufacturers, some are much nicer than others.

I'm more into screens with accurate color representations, which i think my droid has near perfect colors. I hate oversaturated colors like you see at best buy, those "vivid" settings always make things look fake. Brighter and more vivid doesnt always mean it's a better screen.

Just my 2 cents.
 
While I haven't compared it with the Eris side by side, I will say that the Droid screen blows the iPhone screen away. 50% brightness is more than adequate in glaring, direct southern sunlight. In fact, I keep the brightness below the factory minimum with the quick settings app. Indoors, the contrast at this lowest of brightness settings is still well maintained, and I save inordinate amounts of battery power this way.

Was thinking this too. Though I have heard "pop" for graphic design.
