Is it me or my phone or does the camera on gingerbread just suck hind tit. The camera on my Eris hands down takes better picks.

try vignette. I've gotten some amazing pics out of it. Demo won't do full resolution though.

What does this app do diff to make pictures turn out better with same hardware. Or is the problem software and this app fixes that.

It's software related. The camera we have is awesome IMO.

The camera itself is fine. It's the AOSP software that sucks. I use Vignette myself and it takes some great pics.

we don't have AOSP software on the camera natively. Its Moto/Blur software that runs the camera out of the box.
