Root Is it possible to change the side button functions?

I've been wanting to know if it's possible to remap the hard buttons on the phone. Does anyone have any ideas?

Never say "you can't" to others when you don't know how to.
so, just say: "I don't know" for this question, because in fact, the function of the buttons CAN be changed, and you just, simply don't know.

if you install req's cm7 you can go to cm settings and remap the keys. when I'm using my phone I set the search button long press to vlingo and the home button long press to task kliller/set cpu and the menu long press to messaging app . theres also a setting where if your screens off you can long press volume +/- rocker to play & skip music..
