Help is it possible to upgrade my Samsung galaxy s2 android software to 4.3?

Hello there, I bought a new activity tracker recently and it is only compatible with android software 4.3 and above. I have had my current phone s2 for almost 3 years and still loving it. Now the only issue is it does not support my activity tracker app.

1) is there any way out to upgrade it to android 4.3?
2) must I root before upgrading the software? Can I do it without rooting?

Thanks!

You can root and run the 4.3 ROMs or higher or you can root edit build.prop to trick the app so you can use on the device or last just root and run a KitKat stable rc ROM that has 4.4-4.3 . that's it just rooting

@elephantrosie : If you only want to be rooted, search for Framaroot.
If you want to be rooted and installing Custom - Recovery at the same time,
search for Philz Kernel or Philz Touch.
I'm new on Androidforums, so I can't post Links here.

Only for to be sure : Your Device is Galaxy S2 I9100 ?
