Is KitKat intentionally "crippled"?

What do you mean by "screen time"?

Generally, my phone is laying on my desk or in my pocket. I generally don't pick it up unless I get a call or a text. I don't sit on it looking at social media or other things, as I am almost always sitting at a computer of some sort or at home I would rather be on my tablet if I need to be online. I don't use my phone for music or media stuff as a general rule.

This morning, I took my phone off of the charger at 6:45. By the time I got to my office at 7:30 it was at 85%. In that time I got one 20 second phone call from my wife asking to run back home and grab something for my daughter, and I had a 5 or 6 text exchange with my daughter. (All of this while still in "SAFE MODE") My wife's phone is doing almost the exact same thing and she does not do any social media stuff like FB or Twitter, nor does she ever use a web browser on her phone. She simply uses it for phone calls and texts.

Like I said, these have been rock solid phones until the Kit Kat update. It was right then and there that the battery consumption went nuts on both of them. I used to go a full day until bed time and I would then be at maybe 30-40%. My wife could go 2 days on a charge easy because she doesn't use her phone that much. Now we both are constantly scrambling to be within reach of a charger it seems for fear of the phone burning through battery. And if you are getting a weak cell signal ... forget it. Both phones get so hot you can barely touch them. I was in a gym a couple weeks ago at my daughter's volleyball tourney for about 4 hours. My phone went from over 90% when I walked in to the battery flashing red (under 15%) in that period of time ... and the phone was smoking hot. My wife's phone performed similarly.

Again all this started when Verizon sent us the Kit Kat updates. I'm not sure Verizon will let me go backwards.

At this point, my wife is up for an upgrade and she will likely take it because of what has been going on. I have to wait until some time in March to upgrade so I have to live with this unfortunately.

Thom, I didn't think of that, never heard of the infamous flashlight app.

decraig2000, well I just do not know now what to say. You answered my question, as I was wondering if you were constantly 'waking' your phone to check how fast the battery is draining. At this point all I can suggest is take it/them to a VZW store and see what they say.

good luck
