Is Motorola going to go out of business again?

Basis

I dunno - it seems nobody really carries a Motorola android device anymore save for some of the Droid veterans and some people who bought other Moto Droids and android devices. Everybody who wants to get an android device always seem to lean on either htc or Samsung (and pretty soon LG) now. Is this really the end for them? A lot of people here hate them with their boot loader policy and MotoBlur which is understandable for those who want to modify their devices or just don't like Blur. And whenever they announce a new phone nobody really gets excited anymore, it's like every other manufacturer has them on their knees already. And whenever you see an announcement for a new Moto device, a big percentage of responses are usually resent towards the company - more so than any other manufacturer. What do you guys think?

In the last 6 years I've had only ONE non-Motorola phone - a Blackberry Curve; and 6 months with it I jumped ship from Verizon to Sprint, paying about $150 ETF in the process, to get a decent flip phone (without a Verizon UI). Later that year, Verizon won me back with the Droid. Based on my own personal experience, I would go with a Motorola over any other manufacturer. Except for my son's LG Ally (which seems well made, if under powered), I don't have any experience with HTC, Samsung, LG, etc., so I'm not bashing them. It's just that Motorola and I have a good history, and to me that counts for a lot.

Over the past lot of years I've had cell phones the majority have been Moto's, followed closely by Samsung.
I haven't rooted and probably won't so don't care if the bootloader is locked or not. I can use Zeam to bypass Blur. I like the phones they make.
That being said, I wish all Androids were vanilla and really do think they should all be root-able. No bloat would be a dreamy day too. It's my phone, let me use it how I want. If i want your stupid crapware I'll load it. If i want to OC it let me.
But yeah, I'll get another Moto if it has what I want (come on Blur-less vanilla 3!).

Motorola has been making the PTT (iden) phones for nextel and the mike network here in canada for as long as I can remember but when I left the mike network to get a real phone the lady i dealt with at Telus told me that motorola is going to stop making PTT (iden) phones for both these networks in 2013.

I dunno, seems to me like the Droid brand is doing okay. Of actual people I talk to in real life, every person I know with an Android phone has some kind of Droid.

I agree.

To the OP, there are 530,000 members here. Lets look at the phrase "a lot of of people here hate them with their boot loader policy and MotoBlur which is understandable for those who want to modify their devices or just don't like Blur....?

The bootloader petition was signed by about 10,000 people. The Facebook poll had probably 10,000 voting for the bootloader to be unlocked. Its a good chance those are the same 10,000 ppl for both the petition and the poll.

Are all those 10,000 ppl on this forum? I dont know, but I dont believe so. So when you say a lot of ppl here and emphasis a lot, I dont think the number of ppl here that hate Moto is alot. I believe its alot less than 10,000 on this forum that hate Moto.

The Atrix forum is growing. I think the thing is Moto has a phone on AT&T that wasnt usually well known for decent Android phones and probably isnt advertized as good as it could be. Put the Atrix on Verizon with the Droid commercial machine behind it and it would be more popular.

For real, Blur on the X, Droid 2, Droid Pro, Atrix is forgettable by using a different launcher and lock screen app. The newest version of Blur thats on the X GB leak is a lot better.

And when the Atrix was announced there was plenty excitement over it. There might not be any excitement from Verizon customers cuz of no 4G Moto phones and nothing new being released yet. When the X2 drops you might see some interest from folks here n there. And if going by responses of articles, Moto and Samsung are about neck n neck for having folks hating them...lol

Look at the Atrix and Inspire forums. Its almost even in the amount of activity they have. I think its a lil too early to say they are going out of business.

This cant be serious. "A lot" of people use Moto Droid-Series phones. "A lot" of people act like the Atrix is the best phone ever. "A lot" of people cant wait to get their hands on the DX2. Yes, many people, including myself, dont like MotoBlur. But that doesnt mean that motorola is not selling phones. Where are you getting your information?

You can't blame a guy for getting that impression.

Motorola has gradually grown their smartphone sales (by far mostly Android) to 4.1 million in the last quarter. But its nothing compared to Samsung with 12.6 million last quarter, mostly Android, and HTC with 9.7 million, again mostly Android.

It should be noted that LG surged from 600,000 smartphones same quarter last year, to over 4 million in the last quarter, putting it neck and neck with Motorola. Last year, LG moved over a million Optimus One in 40 days, the most successful LG mobile model in its history. Last quarter, LG moved over 700,000 Optimus 2X, which is not bad for a month and a half.

Motorola is not doing badly as it is showing sequential growth in the hot smartphone section. But it is being eclipsed by the manufacturers in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and China.

I didn't vote on any Facebook poll for Motorola, wasn't even aware of it, but due to their encrypted locked bootloader nonsense, I will probably never own a Motorola phone.

If moto release their US phone with International versions, their stocks will go up again (and I don't mean the literal "stocks").

I put this in here. If you disagree, feel free to PM a mod and ask them if they would move it. I'm just doing my job. (I get paid by the move. :p)

I indirectly work for Motorola mobility, and none of my contacts seem to be worried they are going anywhere. In fact they have over 50 job postings on their website at least 30% of which are management level or higher. That's just my two pennies worth.

Surely you have some connects on any new upcoming devices?

^Talking about the news thats spreading around the net like wild fire? lol

Yea Google just purchased Motorola Mobility. I think its a great move.

My Atrix 2 is a GREAT phone. Motorola has a huge law enforment communications presence and all the astronauts use Motorola products to talk in space....I don't think they're going anywhere.

I would agree.

Motorola is the largest suplier of cable boxes to the cable companies and they are activating a large percentage of the 700,000 Android phones per day. And with Google buying them.... they're here to stay..... at least for a while.

Also the headsets used by coaches in the NFL are Motorola's, probably has been for years.

I think its safe to say Moto will be fine.

Google baught Motorola. So in a sense they are. I think we will look at better phone software from Motorola now. I have had 4 motorola androind phones. All wonderfull hardware with crappy software. The only one was the first droid that ran stock android.

With google devs working directly with Motorola hardware techs... it is a start of a golden age of android in my opnion.
