Help Is my GPS just not working?

Hi folk :) ,

my problem is that when I have Use Wireless networks and Use GPS satellites switched on but not Wifi on then my location in Maps is like about 500, probably more, meters away.

Plus when I am in Navigation I am always Searching for GPS with no lock.

When I switch off Use Wireless networks and try it just on GPS then the location always comes up Your current location is temporarily unavailable.

With Wifi on I do get an accurate location but in Navigation it still says Searching for GPS constantly. Plus I can't always use Wifi.

I have GPS Status on my phone but not sure what to look out for if it wasn't working right.

I have tried a few ideas from other posts like removing SIM, memory card and battery etc but nothing seems to get a good location when I have Use Wireless networks and Use GPS satellites switched on. Plus constantly searching for GPS. I'm wondering if my GPS is faulty?

Sometimes a test kicks the gps into action

There's a maps tab so you can see if you can get a fix
 
Going on from this, and apologies for the mild thread highjack Greg, but does anyone know if you can upgrade the GPS chipset software on the Desire? I can on my Garmin GPS, and was thinking if you can upgrade the ROM, radio, and kernel on the Desire then why not the GPSware?

Can't guarantee this is correct, but I would suspect those drivers are within the Radio and using the correct radio and RIL would effectively be what is required.
 
Tried what you said SUroot and the GPStest is showing nothing in Status and the Map doesnt find any location with the GPS turned on. Not looking good is it? :( I really dont want to have to send this phone back for a couple of weeks again when I only got it in November.

I really love this phone but that could all change if it keeps breaking. Twice now since Nov 2010. That's poor and makes me think are they too fragile? Just so disappointed in it. Do iphone's break as much?

Had mine since may. I've dropped it several times and flashed the hell out of it. No internal issues at all

I let Vodafone know of the problem and they replied

Thank you for contacting Vodafone regarding the GPS.
I would like to inform you that in order to get GPS on your HTC Desire handset, I request you to visit the nearest Vodafone store where our executive will definitely assist you with the same.
I trust the above information helps.


Does this mean it is a setting on my phone that hasnt been switched on since I last got it repaired ('refurbished' they called it) or is it just another way of saying to bring it in and they will send it off for another repair?


I'm asking as I really would love to avoid having to go the shop.
 
I think they will simply try verify if the phone gets a GPS lock or not.
If not, they should suggest to send it for a repair.

It may indeed need to be sent for a repair. Normally, if you simply switch on the GPS and open GPStest application in the open air, you should get a location fix within 1-2 minute. Looks like you have tried it already without a success.
 
Yeah, I'm in discussion with HTC at the minute about getting it repaired- I really DONT wanna go near Vodafone ha ha!!
