Help Is my phone dying? How can I check?

fruey

Lurker
My phone was a brick a couple of weeks ago. When switching on it went to the SAMSUNG screen and stayed there.

I hunted around, got the phone in recovery mode, and proceeded to root & flash the device with the latest stable Cyanogen mod (9) and everything worked fine for a week.

Now I have applications crashing all over the place, including background apps. I see the message "Unfortunately, x has stopped working" where x can be Talk, Messaging, Facebook, android.acore and a host of other things.

I've tried taking out the microSD card, deleting the cache, etc. but the problem has become persistent.

Could I have issues with internal memory that are fixable? Is there a utility/app that can scan memory for me and indicate issues? Should I run something other than Cyanogen mod9? Would a more recent nightly / beta version work out better?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums fruey! :)

With the sort of problems you are experiencing, the best advice I can give you is to either...

1. Download and flash, via Odin, the stock Samsung firmware for your phone after first doing a Factory Reset.

Model: GT-I9100
Country: France (SFR)
Version: Android 4.1.2
Changelist: N/A
Build date: Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000
Product Code: SFR
PDA: I9100XWLSD
CSC: I9100SFRLSC
MODEM: I9100BULS1

2. Downloading a stable custom ROM, such as the latest NEAT ROM 4.4.2, and flashing that. I would be inclined to flash the stock firmware above, first, so that you have a known, good, stable base to operate from.

I would also recommend you remove the SD card and the SIM card while flashing. Keeps things clean as possible.

Not to confuse the situation, you might also Consider the latest SuperNexus ROM

I like the look of SuperNexus but the DL link is broken. Why is it always so hard, you really have to hunt around for all the cool stuff these days...

First attempt not good. I got tired of waiting for the stock ROM download, and tried NeatROM directly from recovery menu. Getting set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed, Error in [path to file] Status 7, Installation aborted.

Guess I'll have to wait a bit more.

I read the instructions this time, missed the KitKat CWM steps, got it working now. Now to restore all my apps and see if it can stay stable

NeatRom KitKat goodness :)

Step 1. Read all the instructions, then proceed to step 2. ;)

Glad you got it working. If it proves unstable at this point you might have some failing hardware.

fruey, I shall add to the excellent advice. Although not strictly necessary, but it maybe worth it. If your doing a complete rebuild anyway copy your media folders to a PC, format your external SD card in the phone and copy them back. It may be unnecessary, but it will ensure a completely "clean" rebuild. Hope it is all working OK when you've finished.
