Root Is Rooting and Lag Fix on 2.1 Worth it?

DrSparkey

Newbie
I guys...I'm a little new to android but I've been in tech support for over 12 years so the technology feels comfortable...I have searched and read the stickies on rooting, OCLF, and other mods...

I have a new Vibrant and would like some opinions if rooting and lag fix on 2.1 is worth doing still?

I'm not sure I want to move to the unofficial 2.2 firmware (the non T-mobile version) yet I would like to remove blowtware, add over-clock, fix lag, and WiFi tether...

thanks...

First and foremost, welcom to the forums and to android.

Rooting and OCLF will help...alittle. By themselves, they don't show much of an improvement. Atleast none that you would consider to be significant.

Whats your qualms with flashing a devs rom? Thats the one thing about the vibrant is that it is almost unbrickable. Its nothing that a quick flash from odin can't fix if you do mess something up. If you have read the stickies and done some research you'll find that the unofficial 2.2 roms are based off of leaks that samsung put out.

In order to overclock you atleast need to flash a kernel that is able to overclock but I feel that if your going to go that route you might as well go 2.2 first and see how you like it. 2.2 is light years ahead of 2.1 on the same level as 2.1 is ahead of 1.6.

By all means, give it a try with just the oclf(can't do it without rooting) first and see how it feels. Than go ahead and try flashing one of the many ROMs that are available. Like I said, you can always go back but I don't think you ever will. Trust me.

I tried to go back to 2.1 in anticipation of an OTA and I got so fed up that I almost cancelled my Tmo contract in favor of either a droid x or evo. Luckily enough for me their were people here that talked me off the ledge.

The Devs and the support that they give far outweigh any that Samsung has. I warn you though, once you lose your flashing virginity, you'll do it over and over again.

Thanks jree....I guess my biggest aversion to flashing roms is (from what I understand) you then have to pull all your contact, set up email accounts, and add any apps again. I use my phone for work as well as home email so I don't want to keep having to add accounts over and over...

From what I have seen most of the 2.2 roms have some kind of bug in them...3.5 jack doesn't work or something small...if this is not the case and there is a good (no bug) 2.2 rom out please let me know what it is...

Thanks again for the help...

I have run quite a few ROMs and have only had bugs with the older ones. Most of the JL4 and higher builds (especially the voodoo injected ones) seem to have the bugs addressed and removed within the first day of release. The two most popular ROMs out right now are Nero v(x) and Axura 2.2.(x). I have run Nero v3, v4(and 4.1), and Nero v5. All three are good choices, but IMO the smoothest(and best looking) ROM available right now is Axura 2.2.6. Not to say that Nero wasn't smooth, it just didn't feel quite as snappy as this. As for your contacts you can do 2 things. 1: sync your contacts with your gmail account, and 2: export your contacts to the sd card as a backup. Your apps can be restored with titanium backup. Your email accounts (other than your req gmail) will have to be re-set up, but in all honesty you are getting so much more out of a good custom ROM vs stock JI6 that I really don't see why you would not want to sacrifice 10 minutes to re-enter some passwords. If you are thinking you want to wait for the OTA update, don't bother. Within 3 days of it's release, Team Whiskey, Devs4Android, Heathen, and maybe even Eugene373 will all have modified(better) versions of it available for you to flash. If you are already taking the steps to root, why not? You have already crossed the line in to "no warranty" territory. You may as well reap the benefits of your bravery.

Just install this
[ROM] KA5, build date 2011.01.11 - xda-developers

It's pure samsung and installs over the top of your current stock rom.

Only thing you lose is your home screen icons, but if you root first, then back up twlauncher using titanium, then root after and restore twlauncher, you get your icons back. The only thing you need to rebuild are your widgets. Everything else is completely intact after the upgrade.

Well you guys were right....I rooted, and did the OCLF. Got all excited because I got a Quadrant score of 2100+. Then flashed to Axura 2.2.6 !!! Wow....what a difference. Maybe not as high of a q-score but man this phone just flies now... !!!

Thanks for all the input and suggestions... :D

uh oh...ur in trouble now. All it takes is one time and now your gonna be looking for that high over and over again just like a crack head.

Stick with2.2.6 for a while. A new mode for us just came out and so far its been working better than any modem out. Its a matter of time before devs4android and team whiskey make a rom with it.

Hey guys i was reading all post and you guys seem knowledgeable/friendly. I rooted my Samsung Vibrant, OCLF, and Set CPU. My quaurant score is 1600+ (fast but not where I would like it) I've tried flasing Axura 2.2.9 but I'm stuck with flashing the zip file. I'm using ROM manger to flash the ROM. Everytime I flash clockworkmod recovery, i get "failed verify signature", aborting task, blah, blah! I''m not sure how to correct this problem. Your help is greatly appropriated! Thanks guys!
