Root Is rooting detectable? (Warranty)

The thing that holds me back from actually rooting is the warranty issue. If I unroot/RUU my HTC Desire, can HTC or someone else see if I have previously rooted my phone if I want it repaired or something?
Or should I just wait for my warranty period to end before rooting?

If you return to stock with an ruu, its undetectable
