Root Is rooting/romming worth it?

For me rooting was worth it

1) To remove some pre-installed applications I will never use.
2) To be able to run AdFree
3) To be able to run Droidwall
4) To be able to tinker with the phone on a lower level.

I have no interest in ROM-ing. Perfectly satisfied with stock ROM

One of my favorite root apps is Titanium Backup. With so many bunk app updates, it's nice to be able to un-do a bad update by restoring an app to the version you had before the bad update. (Provided you made a back up) Titanium Backup, font installer, adfree Android, wireless tether are just a few root apps I could not live without

Used the T-Bolt for a couple of weeks. Returned it because it kept rebooting randomly. I am fairly sure my phone was just defective, and that isn't a problem common among all T-bolts. But that combined with crappy battery life. I just decided to get something else. I tried using a dumbphone for a while convincing myself I can live without a smartphone. I'm sure I can live without one, but I don't want to. :)

I have my eye on a lightly-used Incredible that I am planning on buying Friday. To me the Incredible has everything going for it that the T-Bolt does, except 4G and a bigger screen.

1. 4G is extremely fast. I had good 4G at home, but not at work, and I could tell a huge difference. But 3G is sufficient. I came from an Eris with 3G only, and it was fast enough for my needs. So the Incredible should be fine in that area.

2. Bigger screen. I like how much bigger the Incredible's screen is over the Eris. But the T-Bolt's screen is just too big in my opinion. It's nice for viewing pictures and stuff like that, but just for regular use, it's a hassle. And it makes the phone too big to pocket. The Eris was too small and the T-Bolt was too big. But the Incredible seems just right.

They have the same processor, the same Android version and the same Sense version, so when the T-Bolt is on 3G network it should perform pretty much exactly the same as the Incredible.

I'll wait another year or so, until Verizon releases a new Incredible, or something like it, the same size. But until then, I think I'll be happy with my Dinc.

My eris just went defective and VZ agreed to give me an Inc as a replacement at no extra charge including charger. I used my eris battery in the new Inc and it works fine. Like my eris I rooted it and the battery seems just fine, not that different than my eris. I did have an upgrade and considered the TB which VZ offered me at $149, but after trying out my friends I actually like the Inc better for my needs as I really don't need 4G that badly as I am around wifi so much at home, work, travel. I have the Inc now for a few weeks and wow, what a great phone and big improvement over my rooted eris, actually typing on my laptop now while wirelessly tethered to my Inc up at my cabin in the north woods where they actually have a VZ tower, no other internet access here unless satellite which totally sucks even compared to 3G...the other thing I noticed is how overheated my eris got while wireless tethering, as much as 128 while the Inc is setting at 88 right now after tethering for about an hour.

totally agree Joe, definitely could not live without Titanium Pro. I totally restored all my apps and data with Titanium from my old eris to new inc, plus either removed or froze bloatware I didn't need. Wireless tether I use all the time. I haven't tried adfree but will take a look...

I've had my Inc now for a few days. I love this phone, everything about it except the battery life. My Eris had better battery life than this Inc.

I am seriously considering buying the Seido Slim 1750mah battery as soon as I can.

I mean, I am having to charge it all day practically, and when I unplug it it will drop 30% in about an hour (an hour of being in my pocket not being used). The first day I took it to work, I had charged it all night, and unplugged it at 5:00am, and by 8:30 it was down to like 30%. And I wasn't using it at all.

It seems a little better today, but I don't know.

Other than that, I really like this phone. And I think if I get that Seido battery that will help a lot.

So back to my original question.

As far as ROMs go, what is the Inc equivalent of xtr_Rom for the Eris?
What I mean by that for those who never had the Eris, which Inc ROM out there has the following properties?

1. Just as stable if not moreso than stock.
2. Processor management, i.e. the ability to speed up or slow down the processor automatically when necessary to conserve battery life.
3. Keeps the finer parts of Sense while ditching the bloat. Or it could ditch Sense completely.
4. Everything works, no camera bugs or any other bugs. I want a ROM that all the bugs have already been fixed.

I'm mainly looking for better battery life more than anything. It already performs quite well as far as I am concerned.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is Incredibly ReEngineered still the bees knees for what I'm looking for?

well, my eris was rooted and I also used xtrsense 5.0 which I loved. I also immediately rooted my new inc but just using stock rom as the speed is great with no lag compared to stock eris.

I did many of the same steps I did with my eris to improve the battery, after rooting, then going in to wipe battery stats, also setcpu lower on sleep and when battery went under 20%, also unchecked sync for gmail as I don't use gmail, instead using my mail from outlook, also removed or froze apps I don't need with titanium pro, especially skype which seemed to be a battery drain, set brightness to 1/2, unchecked annimations, screen off at 1 minute, etc..I also don't sync to facebook, twitter, etc as I don't really use those like many.

If I am not using my phone a ton for surfing web, etc it easily lasts a few days, if heavy use easily lasts all day which works for me. You can also try the bump charge which many use, after charging all night, unplug, turn off, plug back on while is orange, then unplug when it turns green again and turn on....I have found that saves battery at the start from like dropping from 100% to 90% quickly but not a huge deal....

have fun with the new phone...

What do you use to set your CPU speed?

Can you point me to a thread that outlines the simplest way to root my Inc?

setcpu for root which you can find in the marketplace once your inc is rooted.

The inc is not quite as easy to root as the eris which I used onestep root for the eris as you need to load drivers for the inc through your device manager on your computer, but not really too big a deal if you just follow the steps carefully. Here is the link I used which is updated and easy to follow...good luck!

Before you spend all that money on the Seidio, look into the Mytouch battery. They've been selling them dirt cheap on Ebay. (Fits in both the Incredible and the Eris) You get 2 for something like $10, plus they throw in a nice charger. It's a 1500 Mah battery, and it makes all the difference. Unless I'm camping in the forest or something, I ALWAYS get a full day's charge out of it, often more. I think a lot of people on this forum are with me and can confirm that buying this battery is one of the best moves they've made.

Ok, I'll check it out.
Thanks!

My battery is actually doing a little better now, but it's still not great.
Part of my problem is the 3G signal at my work is pretty weak. So it's constantly connecting and disconnecting and reconnecting, and I think that is a big drain on the battery. When I'm outside at work, it's not bad, but at my desk it sux. So I have gotten into the habit of just leaving it plugged in when I'm at my desk.

But I will definitely check out that battery. I wouldn't think 200mah would make a huge difference, but maybe it's a better battery on top of being slightly bigger.

I'm leaning toward rooting but keeping the stock ROM. At least for a while, and see how that works.

@offanairplane:

see if you can talk your boss into getting a wireless router, so you can feed off the WiFi at work, because as I'm sure you know by now there is no bigger battery killer than a lousy signal...

But yes, you will definitely notice a difference in this battery, particularly when you congratulate yourself for how much money you're saving!!

saw they are selling 2000 mah on ebay, 2 & a battery charger for $16 for the incredible....from hong kong...wonder if they are any good. I have heard the seido is really only 1300/1400 and they are not responding to complaints that it is potentially fraud...

We have plenty of wireless routers out here, but unfortunately the IT department does not allow non-company devices to connect to it.

But the good news is that since many of us have company phones, and the signal does stink inside the building. They are going to buy a cellular repeater/booster. So hopefully I'll have a good strong 3G signal before too long.

According to a test someone did on this forum, the Seido is closer to 1600mah. Which is not as much as advertised, but it's still not bad.

Like suggested above, do many of the same things to the DInc that you did to the Eris to improve battery life (limit widget refreshes, lower screen brightness - etc). Though I expect you're right that the weak 3G signal at work is really what's draining the battery.

I rooted my DInc shortly after I got it. I'm still running the stock ROM but I've changed to the Lou's #7 kernel - that seems to be a good combination for decent battery life.
I don't ROM-hop on the DInc like I did on the Eris. On the Eris there was always the search for something just a BIT faster, but the DInc has enough horsepower that I don't feel the need to try to gain every bit of speed I can. So I deleted the bloatware, make a Nand every now and then in case the phone dies, and I'm a happy camper.

I really didn't do that much to the Eris, other than installing xtrROM. I know that ROM did a lot of stuff to make battery life better. But for some reason I am still hesitant to put a custom ROM on my Inc. Maybe because I just don't know enough about them. And maybe because my Inc just smokes as it is, even with the bloat on there. And battery life is acceptable now, but it's not great. As far as I can see there doesn't seem to be an equivalent to xtr_ROM for the Inc.

I know having widgets and email update often uses battery, but that is what I got a smartphone for. I would rather have crappy battery life (or have to get a big battery) than to have to wait an hour for my emails to get synched, or even facebook. I like flipping over to my facebook widget, and knowing that the stuff on there is not more than 15 minutes old. I really wish it were instant. Same for email.

Just rooted. Piece of cake.

I was intimidated by it because of some outdated instructions I read on xda forums.

But the instructions here:
http://androidforums.com/incredible...stock-incredible-evo-2-2-a-4.html#post2615407

were very straight forward and easy to follow.

So I am rooted! YAY!

Now I think I will try out a custom ROM.

I have done a nandroid backup, so if I try a ROM and don't like it, I can always just do a nandroid restore, and get right back to where I was before, right?

Inc1 would suck without the root community... im afraid the inc2 is going to be no good. if its even able to get rooted at all...

I don't know if I agree with that. Coming from an Eris, I thought the stock Inc was pretty, well Incredible. :)

I'm sure it will be better with custom Roms, but it was no slouch as stock either.

I think I'm going with SkyRaider_4.0 for starters. Any thoughts on that one?
It says it's stable and good on battery life. Sounds good to me. Also lots of included goodies.

edit:
Skyraider 4.0 installed.
