is signing a Gmail account required

is getting a Gmail account required to use this phone?
a) browse internet
b) bing search
c) Load apps
d) use mapquest NAV/GPS

Wife got this phone but she don't have a Gmail account. SHe's been using it as A phone only the last 2 weeks. Haven't load any apps not get on internet yet.

If you want access to apps and the market, yes a gmail account is necessary.

....otherwise, no, an account isn't required.....but you will be losing out on many of the benefits that make the android operating system appealing.

thanks all....here a followup question. Can you register 2 phones with 1 gmail account? I already register my gmail acct with my phone (Droid Charge) and can my wife use the same Gmail acct. to register her phone(LG Revolution)?

Yes, but you'll share the same apps, contacts and mail.

As lunatic59 says. My wife has a Vortex and I deliberately created a second Gmail account so her phone would be on a different one. Both accounts use the same credit card for purchases, however. - MarkC
