is the desire's maximum memory 16gb or 32gb?

It can take up to a 32GB Micro SD card. Until recently, 16GB was the maximum capacity of Micro SD. 32GB haven't been on the market for long. They are not cheap either.
 
all sources iv seen say 32 gig is the max
but even then i guess that is only a recomendation. when i got my first nokia that took memory cards it said the max was 128 mb but infact it handled 256 mb when i tried it
 
Doubtful. They haven't been manufactured with AMOLED for a few months or so now. This was due to not being able to keep up with demand. Your best bet for that would be second hand

Both of those links are the same phone the A8181, there are three versions really, the A8181 Euro only, A8182 USA 850/1900 from Telus, and the A8183 from Austrailia that has 850/2100 I believe!!!
