Is the Galaxy Nexus really worth it?

I don't see not having a sdcard as a problem since it has 32GB internal, I don't see how that means you have to use the cloud.

More MP's on a camera doesn't make the camera better, it does nothing for the resolution of the pictures taken. More MP's only really matter if you're printing the pictures and making them huge.

Flash will not matter soon either as Adobe is going to stop making flash for mobile devices in favor of html5. To me that means websites will follow suit knowing that mobile devices are out selling PC's.

The thing with Flash and HTML5....how quick are websites gonna switch over? On mobile phones we can still use Desktop mode to see sites. Some even have a setting on the mobile browser to switch to Desktop mode easy.

I really wish I could say without a doubt that it is but I feel everyday something comes out that slows down my excitement. I will most likely end up buying it but the 16GB is certainly disappointing and at this point I kind of wish VZW got the SGS2 and I would just wait for ICS which is already ported to it. Oh well I well definitely be getting the GN unless some extremely huge news about it comes out but it really has been disappointing all the news that's popped up in the past week or 2.

I think verizon training material table released a few weeks ago confirmed 32Gb memory on their Nexus and our sources confirmed it too. That google page info must be typo or just copy of GSM verision I think. Regarding flash thing, I didn't know it's going to happen this quick. But again we all knew it's matter of time and when ICS hits other high end phones next year, we will all be in the same boat on flash thing. So this is not Nexus specific issue to me. And I'm really getting sick and tired of 5MP camera sensor issue that some folks simply can't stop bringing up. 8MP or higher mega pixel is nothing more than bragging right and it doesn't gain anything in image quality other than ability to print very large paper which no one does with phone.

So my only frustration with Nexus is how VZW is handling its launch. It's getting dangerously close to Bionic fiasco in summer. I recall that a lot of fans were pissed off when Moto pushed it back to early September when everyone was expecting early August release. I saw many that vowed "never Moto again" at that time but it was quickly forgotten as September launch day approached. So I guess it will finally come anywhere from next week to 12/8.

As for the next quad cores coming early next year, I simply can ignore it at least until summer next year. There are simply no apps that can utilize multiple cores other than small handful of 3D games. Today's high end dual core phone is more than enough for me to last a full year at least. Overall hardware/software around quad core processor will be barely matured by late next year I think.

I agree 100% with you Sandroidfan. Most of the reviews I've read have been pretty good about this phone concerning the screen, battery, speed, smoothness etc. I think this phone is going to turn out to be a great phone but VZW has just completely botched this launch for whatever reason(I feel like its for personal gain) and as long as this phone has unlocked bootloader and a strong dev community then I really want it.

Yeah I think the 5mp thing is blow out of proportion but I do want to see a good camera I don't care the MP . The Iphone4 only had 5mp but blew away my Incredible and Fascinates 8mp cameras. I actually had my Thunderbolt and Rezound both set to 5mp as it takes up less memory and the pictures in lower light situations were slightly better plus I'm not blowing up any Camera phone pictures

Fascinate has a 5mp camera.

I've been following the reviews of the camera closely since I'm not one of the people that thinks it's practical to carry around a point and shoot at all times. The 5mp camera on the nexus seems to be less capable than the camera on the sg2 regardless of the mp count. If anyone read the full review from the verge, which said the nexus was one of the best smartphones ever made, it shows the camera under the cons as being "hit or miss." As much as I want to love this phone the negatives are adding up.

Is it really worth it lol? I've had both Nexus so far and have 0 interest in GUI'd android phones, so yeah the new Android 4.0 VANILLA is worth it. I won't be getting the Verizon one with their fail logo or two apps on it though.

BTW, boo hoo at the people whining about flash, thanks to Steve its dead on mobile, get over it.

My first response when I looked at the specs was what a waste, nice screen and processor and then to miss out on a microsd slot and include an outdated graphics processor just made no sense, I hoped the specs were wrong but they ended up right but with 1.2GHz processor.

The 5MP vs 8MP arguement is somewhat mute as we don't know enough about the cameras to judge them, mega pixel count just doesnt tell us much.

However reviews do suggest the camera on the Nexus is not that great, not as good as the camera on the Galaxy S II at least so as much as the Nexus fanboys dislike it, the camera on the Nexus is a Negative regardless of the pixel count.

For me, nope.

Overall the Exynos GSII phones are still the best android phones ever made

Agreed, best CPU available which supports Neon Instructions, something the Nexus lacks and the best graphics processor available on android.

The only thing it currently lacks is the HD screen; however since it doesn’t use pentile the sub pixel density is not that much lower anyway. :D

The point and question is this...Am I , are we, giving up to much just to get this supposedly great OS on the Galaxy Nexus?

Did we get caught up in the DROID PRIME hype machine the last few months?

I'm questioning all this right now, and I gotta say it looks like alot to give up when you really look at the big picture...

Anyway...what's everyone else thoughts.

Knowing full well i will get flamed into the pits of forum hell for this i agree with you. The Nexus line has always been great but with the swap to Samsung along with the various lacking elements of flash and other hardware specs if this phone wasn't labeled a Nexus it would be "Just another Samsung phone".

I don't hate Samsung. Hell my entire house is nothing but Samsung TV's, Bluerays, surround sound etc because i love the auto wireless bluetooth connect/setup and how all the devices can link together with a push of a button. Imo Samsung is king of home entertainment and even on phones screen quality. Their Super AMOLED PLUS displays are stunning when compared to the competition. That being said hardware wise i think their phones are crap. The radios on all of their devices have never worked as well as another phone by a different provider whether it be moto, htc or dare i even say it LG. They just don't work as well period.

Granted this is just my experience with their phone hardware over the years and is solely my own opinion. When it comes to the Nexus line sadly i think as the years go by we will start to notice a trend in phone hardware with this. Basically hardware specs will keep going down compared to most of the competition because the sellers know they can get the cash they want for said device just by giving it the Nexus name.

I am NOT saying the the Galaxy Nexus is crap. But compared to say the Samsung Galaxy S2 other than ICS being on it (SG2 confirmed to get it as well) what does it really have to offer over that?

I'd agree with this only from the standpoint that we usually reduce every picture to 800 or 1200 pixels wide, or reduce it to a standard sized postcard sized print. But more megapixels does increase the resolution -- just not necessarily the detail or the overall quality of the image.

I recall though that Exynos doesn't work (yet?) with LTE radios needed for Verizon's network. True or not?

I thought the issue was it's "limited" to 20 Mbps...lol. I find that funny cuz there was a topic asking if the chip in the RAZR was...."limited"....to 42Mbps.

I have yet to hit 20Mbps down on my RAZR...closest was 19. And I know most folks cant be averaging higher than that on a regular basis with the RAZR or other LTE phones.

IMO, 20Mbps down is more than fast enough....42Mbps down is insane.

hmm, lets see.

Buttonless design, ergonomic body, first to get Jelly Bean update, multicolored LED notification, zero shutter speed, barometer for gps calculation, comes with higher capacity battery, and not to mention.. its Google branded. :D

I just really hope Google retains complete control over the updates because having those 2 VZW apps, which isn't a big deal BUT it makes me wonder if VZW then "needs" control over updates due to those apps. At this point I wouldn't rule anything out yet until anything is official.

You know, I've been ruminating on this, and have come to the conclusion that even if these updates do have to go through Verizon and VZW takes forever to release them, it's probably not as bad as it sounds.

With other phones that have bloatware or are not Nexus phones, when a new version of the main android branch comes out, it's not going to immediately work on that phone, because the hackers have to get the camera, bluetooth, wifi, etc working with the new OS version on that specific phone.

However, with ICS, the updates from Google will be targeting the Gnex specifically, so after you root, you can probably just install the update from the official branch. I know for a lot of us, the reason why we're getting a Gnex is so we don't have to screw with custom roms anymore, but in this case, it's not really custom. Actually, it's pretty much the same one that Verizon will be sending out weeks/months later.

In fact, it may actually be better this way, because if Google botches one of the updates and it starts bricking phones, it's going to roll out to everybody else first via automatic updates, while VZW users will have the luxury of waiting a few days to see if there are any problems, before we download the rom from Google and install it ourselves :)Collapse this comment

This is my greatest concern as well. If so, that would deprive me of my biggest reason for buying the phone.
