Root Is the new Heartbleed fix OTA safe for rooted phones?

Cephi

Lurker
Does anyone know if this new OTA (3.17.651.5, 14 May 2014) will cause trouble for those who are rooted or planning to root? I expect it probably won't, since it appears to be a narrowly focused Heartbleed fix. But it'd be nice to get some confirmation before installing it. I'm on rooted stock 4.1.1.

The easiest thing you could do, when some devs bake up a stock rom based off of that OTA, flash that rather than taking the official OTA.

Depending your radio/hboot allows it.

I've been out of the HTC loop for a while now, if he isn't s off, taking the official OTA would be his only option no? Since you need s off for flashing the updated radio and hboot if I'm not mistaken.

Not Heartbleed related though.

And you can pick those up with an RUU and then unlock again if you're s-off.

Besides - s-off is easy on this phone.

Typically, if you're rooted, taking an OTA tends to be a bad idea.

Do you have a nandroid backup?

Yes, I have a nandroid backup. If I take the OTA and it messes me up, I guess I can just revert with nandroid? I wasn't sure if the OTA might me up in ways that would prevent me restoring the nandroid.

I think that the issue is that most devs have moved past 4.1.1 - which - another option is to update to a newer version if you want.

I was previously s-off (thanks to the dummies-friendly guides on this forum) and could be again; I had custom ROMs and went back to stock. For me, it was all about the camera setup. I looked and looked, but I could find no way on a custom ROM to replicate the simple camera/gallery setup of the stock ROM. That stock setup allows me to: take burst photos WITHOUT reviewing them immediately, and then LATER go into the gallery to select one photo as the "best photo" and automatically delete all the others. I found apps that would let me take burst photos without immediate review, but then the photos were all stored individually, without any "best photo" function. I'm sure there is probably a way to achieve this on a custom ROM, but I could never find it, even though I tried plenty of camera and gallery apps. The convenience of that camera setup is more important to me than anything I gained by being s-off with a custom ROM, so I finally had to surrender and go back to stock.

Edit: the camera thing is why I went back to stock. I regained s-on to take the phone in for repair. Probably wasn't necessary, I know, but I didn't want to take chances.

It all depends on the OTA.

They can modify just rom bits harmlessly, or pack in any number of things that will cause sadness.

In this case, the OTA is known to require the stock recovery and by all accounts, you'll have to apply an RUU (HTC stock, complete image for the phone, wipes 100% of everything), take the OTA, and then go from there.

I have the exact same sensitivity to the camera and gallery.

And you have another option, although it still requires an RUU.

You can advance to Sense 5.5 and Android 4.3 (immune to Heartbleed).

In addition to that, it will change your partition layout - think of it as having your internal SD card and /data (where your apps and data go) shared as one volume.

Your present nandroids will NOT work with that.

If you want to go that route, I recommend going all the way to Viper4G -

The Heartbleed OTA was pulled into a zip file on May 8th. So far, I haven't seen any devs working to put it into a 4.1.1 rom.

So - what you need -

Choice 1 - apply 4.1.1 RUU, accept OTA, redo all unlocking, install TWRP and root steps (don't use your old nandroids or you'll step on the fix).

Choice 2 - apply 4.3 RUU, redo unlocking, install TWRP, and flash Viper4G (and don't use your old nandroids).

Clear?

Yes, that's helpful, thanks. I intend to go through with choice 2 after I read through the relevant threads.
