Is the phone worth it?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

.. I worked for Verizon Wireless. Employees such as myself were issued a company phone, but were required to have a separate personal phone for personal use. Obviously because of the incredible discounts I got, I had Verizon for my personal service as well.

That got me into the habit of having 2 phones. A habit, that to this day, I still prefer. I really hate having work stuff on my personal phone. HATE IT.

My current employer gives me $40 / month for cell phone service compensation. I would much rather spend that $40 / month on having a separate phone than put it towards my personal phone and have my work stuff on my personal phone. Call me crazy.

I see a VM plan for $45 / month (I would even be willing to eat the extra $5 / month plus taxes, etc). What I would like to know is, is the Evo V a phone still work getting. I don't need the newest technology on the block. Just to be able to work with my Exchange email, surf, and use a few apps.

Let me hear from people that use this phone as daily driver.
What do you love about it?
What do you loathe about it?

IMHO its worth getting.

With prepaid, there are no taxes and crap tacked on. The price you see, is the price you pay...$45/mo. Your only tax is sales tax when you buy a top up card.

However, if you buy your top ups online, you can save 15% and there's no sales tax. The code is emailed to you within about an hour or so. I've done two top ups this way, and am about to do my third one in a week or so.

Good to know. I have never done prepaid before so this is kind of new to me.

I pay $38.25/mo on the $45 plan using that link I gave you. There is no $45 incriment, just $40 and $60. I suggest buying the $60 top ups for $51 (or maybe a penny less?).

The balance stays on your account, so no worries.

If you do get the Evo V I highly recommend an aftermarket battery. I have the Seidio 3000mah, got it from Amazon, $23.15 total at the time.

Amazon has them, but for $200... where as the One V is only $118

Off to check Seidio cases.... BRB

Lol, you got me before my edit kicked in. When they were on sale for $99, they couldn't be found. I just had it in my mind they were gone, stupid me.

There is for me. I switched to the $55 plan for this month. There is a $5.09 sales tax charge, as well as a $3.85 e911 charge, bringing the total to $63.94. So I pay $8.94 more than the rate of my plan. I use the crazygametime site now to pay too, though.

As for the OP, I say this phone is definitely worth getting, if you can find it (it's been out of stock online and other places). It's EOL, but it runs well, there are a bunch of ROMS and tweaks to choose from if that's your thing, and it's an all-around good phone. I like the 3D camera too, even though I don't use it that often.

If you do decide to play with your phone though, I advise checking out the all-root section of this forum first, because if you get the phone and take the OTAs right away, it might impact your ability to get S-off, or receive support for it, anyway. You'd have to get the phone, root and get it S-off, and then take the OTAs.

Hey Palmetto Fellow

Please excuse my ignorance, but as I have stated, I am 100% new to the prepaid game.

What does the top ups actually give you?
If I, for example, buy a $40, is that just a $40 credit on my Virgin account?

Looking at the Virgin website, Virgin Mobile | Beyond Talk Unlimited Data & Messaging Plans
I see a $45 plan that gives me all-I-can-eat data and messaging with 1200 minutes of voice.

How does that $45 / month plan relate to the top up cards?

Just very confused about it.

I might be new to the pre-paid game but fairly comfortable rooting, etc on HTC devices. Have been doing that since the days of my OG-DINC.

If I do end up getting it, it will be rooted... oh yes it will.

I Also have 2 phones. Never mix business with pleasure. This phone is great and past that, the support is awesome. These people now there stuff and are always willing to help. The phone itself was a bit heavy at first, but I have become use to it. The other thing I like is the dock, Leslie Ann recommended it. It is a must have (depending on the case).
Anyhow, if you get one hope to see you around.

You can buy top up cards anywhere. They come in a lot of increments, even $45 exactly. Virgin Mobile doesn't care if you add nine $5 top ups, or a $60 top up. On your monthly renewal date, make sure you've got at least $45 in your account.
I buy the $60 top ups, and each time I do, I end up with a credit of $15. It doesn't matter what I pay for the top up, the face value is what's important.

What's with the e911 crap? Does this affect all plans, or just yours ? I gotta look into this. :(

I cant speak for top ups, but I am on a $35 a month plan, I just have it setup to be taken out of my account every month. No taxes for me, so just a total of $35.

Yes, the top-up cards give you the exact amount on the card. So if you purchase a $45 top-up card, add the number on the card to your account, and you now have an account balance of $45 (plus whatever amount was in there before) to use on your monthly bill. If you were to pay that bill online through your CC or Paypal, you would pay $45 +tax and whatever other fee. If you purchase the top-up card at the store, you pay tax on that as well, at the time of purchase.

It has been a part of my bill since...I want to say at least last year? I noticed it at some point, called, and found out it was a relatively new thing. I don't know if it's for all states though, could just be mine.

When they take the money out of your account, they don't charge taxes. So if it's $35 a month and you have a balance, they'll just take $35. But how do you add money into your account to begin with? For me, anyway, I do get charged taxes if I add money via CC or Paypal.

Here's a picture of my account management. You'll notice a credit of $30, and a balance of $15 due by 4-7-13 to continue service. The reason I have a credit is because I keep buying $60 top ups, and only using $45 of it. So every 4th month is taken care of. I pay $51 per month for 3 months, then I take a month off. It effectively comes out to $38.25 per month. If I wanted, I could go to Best Buy (or Walmart, or like 20 other stores) and buy a $10 and $5 top up card to meet the $15 requirement due by 4-07-13.

Again, the face value is what it's all about. Virgin mobile doesn't really care what you pay for them (or if they do, they aren't doing anything to stop the discount vendors...they probably make a lot of money for Virgin mobile). Anyway, the face value is what counts. I like buying the $60 top ups, and I think you get a slightly better discount over the $40 ones (maybe a few pennies or so).

If you ever give them your CC info for automatic draft, you can't use the 15% discount given by crazygametime when buying top ups until you cancel your auto-draft and move to top ups.

How strict is Virgin on the 2.5GB throttling cap?

I don't think anyone knows. That's a relatively new policy for them, and they are just now getting to a point where they can measure you usage and throttle as needed. I don't usually go over 1 gig, so I don't really care :)

I've never reached it so I can't say personally, but you should be fine as long as you don't go crazy overboard. Wimax hasn't really been monitored up until now, but I'm not sure if they've just installed something to keep track of that along with this new OTA.

I have never added money so to speak. I set it up from day one to just pay the $35 and then have them take it out monthly.
