Is the TB really this problematic?

My Moto Droid is falling apart (it's literally being held together with duct tape) so I need to use my upgrade now. Visiting the Verizon store, I've narrowed it down to the Thunderbolt or the Incredible 2. I really like the larger screen of the TB, but all of the complaints here have me worried.

Are the problems, like random reboots, really widespread, or are these issues being overblown by a vocal minority?

I'm not very tech-savvy, so I don't think I'll be rooting. So, should I take the risk of the TB or go with the Incredible 2 (which, judging by the forums, have far less complaints?)

Thanks in advance.

As long as you do not do the OTA update when you get the phone. You wont have to worry about the random reboots.

Do you need 4g or not thats the only difference in the Bolt and Dinc2. I had to do the leaked fix on my bolt and it works fine.

Might want to take a look at the Droid Charge as it seems to be a good phone. This way you keep your options open. Good luck on your choices and I hope I helped some. If you have more questions I will be more than happy to try and help.;)

My particular area doesn't have 4G yet, but other parts of the city do. I imagine that I will be getting 4G as they expand the coverage area which is another reason I'm leaning towards the TB.

I played around with the Charge, but I just really liked the two HTC phones better.

So, if I decline the update when prompted, I shouldn't have any reboot issues?

I've had my thunderbolt for about a month now without a single reboot or any other serious issue. I rooted my Eris before because I had so many issues with it, and rooting eliminated most of them, but at the moment I've been content to install launcher pro, hide some of the preinstalled apps and run stock on the TBolt. I love it, have not had any problems with it, and would not trade it for any other phone on Verizon ATM. Charge has less RAM but a nicer screen, and the LG Revolution just doesnt appeal to me. The difference between it and the Tbolt are minimal and I like the looks of the Tbolt way more.

I think it's fair to say that the Tbolt's experiencing more issues than some of the other phones. With that said, I've had the Tbolt since day one, installed the update and I have not come across any of the problems. I also know three other co-workers who also bought tbolts when it first came out, installed the update and had no issues. So it might come down to the luck of the draw.

If you think you can will be able to take advantage of 4g for your area in the near future, I would definately say give the Tbolt a shot. 4g speeds are night and day compare to 3g. It will be hard for me to go back to 3g now that I have experience lte.

Hey, you never know, you might just get lucky and get one with no problems like some of us in this forum.

if you decline the OTA then yes you wont have any reboots. I would wait till they come out with GB if they ever come out with it.

It's a great phone, but it is very quirky. The wife and I have had ours since day one and we love them, but if you want perfection, look somewhere else.

No such think as perfection in a smartphone. Well anything for that matter.

I think most of its issues are actually pretty tolerable, really. For instance, even though the stock battery life is pretty bad, I can't imagine the Charge or Revolution are a whole lot better (being that the 4G seems to be what sucks up the most battery). Perhaps they get an hour or two more (which admittedly may be important to some people), but unless they have double the battery life of the Thunderbolt, I don't see the fuss.

As for the reboots, the whole thing is really confusing to me. I downloaded the OTA the day it was released, and I hadn't had a single random reboot at all. Then about a week ago, I started getting, like, one a day. One reboot a day really isn't a big deal, but the fact that I've had the OTA since day one and only started getting random reboots now is a bit odd.

The QC is awful... on TB #4 i can confidently say the differences from one tb to another are noticeable to put it lightly... I never did the OTA on this one and get a couple (2-3) random reboots a week anyway, I'm also in a 3g only area... enough I don't sleep without it on the charger for fear of waking up to blockbuster having sucked the life outta my phone...

Except for storage and screen size god I miss my Droid...... Id get a charge even though the interface blows if I could do it over... not gonna be popular but just my .02$

I'm on my 2nd TB, and the only reason I had to swap out my launch day phone was because the USB port broke, and neither phone, both with the update applied, has rebooted once.

I'm starting to believe that there is some app or type of app that is causing the reboots for those having problems.

I love my ThunderBolt and Verizon's 4G LTE network but, honestly, I do not recommend it for most people. I think the main issue is whether or not you are prepared to use the larger extended life battery or perhaps a couple of spare batteries once your area does get 4G. Most of us have few or no reboots and that will probably be fixed soon, anyway, but for some that may come at the cost of worse battery life. I usually recommed to friends and colleagues that they will probably have a much more consistent and stable smartphone experience with an iPhone. But no 4G LTE. The ThunderBolt suffers from many of the typical drawbacks of being the first phone to be introduced with this cutting-edge network technology but that was 3 months ago so it's not as cutting edge anymore. I really wanted to have the first 4G LTE phone and would do it again because I want that cutting edge, but it's not for everyone. The next generation of 4G LTE phones should be considerably better. Problem is, you can't wait. If I were in your shoes, I would probably also consider getting a good used phone for cheap while waiting to see what's next. Personally, I would not want to get locked into a new Inc2 and not be able to benefit from 4G LTE as it expands into your area. Good luck, you're doing this right way, with your eyes open.

Had the TB since a week after release with no issues at all. My battery generally lasts me all day and I still have 20 to 30% life left when I turn it off and plug it up before bed at 11pm or so.

I don't get the random reboots, maybe I've had one it seems like a couple of months ago.

I didn't do the OTA update but a friend of mine did it the other day (after I told her not to) but she's not experienced any issues since it either and didn't notice any improvements either though (not that she probably would).

It's a great phone and I'm pleased with it. I really think a lot of the people that complain would be people that would complain about winning the lottery and having to pay taxes on it too. Just my opinion.

I did the OTA update when I got my phone & I have never has a single issue with my phone at all. No reboots, The freezing or anything. I dont have 4G in my area yet but where I work about 30 mins away I do get 4G and its blazing fast.

One thing about the Bolt I noticed is that you should invest into the Extended 2750 mah battery I makes HUGE difference. Yes its really that noticable. Anyways I love my Thunderbolt to death its a really great phone.

When 4G is disabled the battery life is great but with 4G the batt life sucks. The extended batt is a must in my opinion but does add alittle more bulk to the rear of the phone. It doesnt bother me a bit but will bother others.

Actually this is no longer true as it seem brand new phones are shipping straight from the factory brand new with MR1 already on it. I FINALLY got Verizon to ship me a NEW phone in hopes it wouldn't have it on it, but it did. This was a factory sealed brand new phone in the black TB box. But it does reboot about 1/5 as much as my old one did. I bought my original on launch day, and this brand new one has a build date of 4/24/11 on it.

Your goddamn right.. in Ny they take about half! lol......I didn't return them for light leakage either

man that sucks.

I've ha d my TB for 3 weeks. I have had no problems with the phone what so ever. My stock battery lasts from 8am - 10pm with no problem, although most of my day is spent on Wi-Fi. The phone is so fast, it's faster than my comcast home modem. My only minor complaint is the screen is difficult to see in sunlight.

The phone freezes all the time when texting... I sometimes have to wait 2 or 3 minutes before the phone unfreezes itself. You must get the extended battery for this phone.

I get that lag sometimes too when typing. For me, it doesn't freeze but just lags badly. I haven't found a solution. It does this when I'm posting here. I just end up tying slowly til it passes.

Sounds like you're keeping all of your texts on the phone. It seems to bog down when you don't clean them out now and then.
