Root is there a data throttle?

good question im sure there has to be some sort of data throttle for the 4g network from metro pcs, i get 4mbs here in sw florida, which is higher than my century link dsl so im happy

If you're on a nonunlimited plan you get throttled down to around 1x or 3G some say it depends on area- on the $30/40 plan you get 250mb of data
$50 plan gets you 2.5GB
$55 plan is unlimited
$60 is 5GB
$70 is unlimited

But if your talking about an overall network throttle that's not throttle it's spectrum constraints later this year we should see better speeds when they allocate more spectrum for 4G

well thats wat i mean if we pay for the unlimited data plan they're gonna push us down to 1x or 3g there are mods to remove this bt im thinking if it's there i would try to remove it

there is no mods to remove a throttle. people see the folder /data/throttle and think they can be smart and bypass the throttle (this is on all devices mind you not just carriers where they throttle)

the problem with that logic is /data gets formatted when you do a factory reset. carrier dont want you doing a factory reset to get a whole new monthly allowance of data. its all server side and nothing you can do to change it. (assuming you get throttled etc etc)

I'm on unlimited $55 plan but use wifi so much I could probably go down to lower Plan.

I see what you're saying about throttling at the server level- but if the IP address of the phone

changed would they still be able to throttle ?

Does the Carrier track Data Usage by IPN address of the phone

or by the phone number ?

Just curious.

Also I have feeling that for now Metro is aiming for about 4 meg of 4G speed for everyone

and will hopefully get even faster as they beef up the Network.

This is not throttling-a different issue, I just noticed so far no one is getting 8 MBS on Metro.

all depends, it could be by account which would be your phoen number, the best way to check this is hit the "limit" and then swap devices on your account to see if it fixes the throttle. the ipaddress is dynamic and changes fairly often.

the sad fact of teh matter is they advertise speeds but actual throughput is much lower, sprints wimax is supposed to get 14, my wife pulls 5 and we can see the sprint tower from my porch

So basically, you are saying that the phone it self does not have a software data throttle? I'm thinking like the limitations of, say, the download speeds.

The OM had 3G throttles on the phone, peaked below 1mb/s, after the patch it could get around 1.5mb/s (tested in Orlando). Just wondering if there is anything like that on the Motion.

oh there are tweaks no doubt, the OEMS make sure to make as stable vs performance as possible. us as modders dont mind if our cpu was supposed to go to 1.8ghz we want it to and we know it can :P

stuff like teh v6 supercharger tweak the values to speed it up some

Depending on my location, I have max at about 2-3mbps (or roughly 250KBps) on 4G connection
I'm in central Florida

The total data you have used is bound to the card in your phone.

If you went to the corp store and told them you lost your card (ie - phone fell and back popped out and card is missing) they can get you another card. New card will be without throttle if you have hit your monthly limit.

I was told that some stores can sell the card directly if it was lost, said around $15 for one.

If you were then able to find your old card, you could call them up and have them switch it back out.

My wife hit her limit and the guy at the store didn't believe that the unlimited account had a limit. He tried another card and changed it in the computer, full data with no throttle. It was only a test to see what was going on, so he switched the card back and gave us the old card (just had to wait until the next month).

The data is monitored by MetroPCS in their servers by the card number you have (keeps track of data usage) and the type of plan on your account (sets limit for data cap).

There is no software setting that you can change on your phone that I know of to circumvent this.

I tried a proxy on my phone with a vpn and yet the phone still keep track of the software data in/output. If you do a factory reset it does loose track and start u back from fresh...so I doubt it communicate on the server side. the only time it probable communicate on the server side is when the phone detect you surpass ur data usage..hope this info helps

for what i remember the data throttle is in the service.jar(which i need to deodex making it easier for myself). once i decompile the service.jar there will be an amount set to be monitored, but when removed it will always a max(dependent of your signal and etc etc) up/down speed letting the end user(motion owners) to use without being dropped to evdo/1x even tho your pay unlimited you always dont get to use it right? so why not try to remove this throttle and check it out. btw can anyone do a system dump i might as well deodex(not making any promises) the entire stock rom. i have a question for any dev out looking in this thread. could it be that the system doesn't just check for the apks but also for odex files? if so deodexing wont be allowed

When I reach my max limit (250MB), my data is throttle on 4G. Meaning, my phone continues to download using 4G, but it is slowed down over the 4G connection. It is not forced to CDMA/EvDO for throttling.

MetroPCS headquarters would have to be dummies to not do throttling server side. I don't think they are dummies, so I think messing with service.jar would be a waste of time. Just my guess, take it for what you will ;)

I've used my dads LG motion (MetroPCS) as a hotspot (Proxy Workaround) and downloaded about 60GB over a course of a MONTH !! YESS I KNOW..... Crazy huh!
Well metropcs was nice enough to Throttle my dads Phone to a max of
16KB Down 20 KB UP.. But kept the internet working :)
It was like that for about 10 days untill 2 days after the day that the phone was purchased.

Well i now Cap my S3 from going over the 60GB mark.

Im Very Very Lucky i Get about ~7 or ~8 mbps with metro.

I get 12mbps in south florida...i dont understand how you guys arent even close to that?

Because some places are better than others. Here in Bakersfield my average is 2Mbps. 3g is almost non existent. The best I have had was in Los Angeles, 10.43 Mbps. All cell towers are not equal. Meaning within the same company all location don't get the same service.

Well yea i new that. I was just saying because most peoples 4g speeds dont ever get past 5-8mbps (on metro service)

I've used way too much data this month like more than mentioned previously in this thread and I haven't run into throttling yet on the $60 unlimited plan.

Also my speeds here in Naples, FL range from 5-13 Mbps down.

I think aftet 60 gigs they throttled me to ancient dialup speed
But i switched to my other motion and was unthrottled
