Help Is there a free GPS program?

Hi, I'm new here. I've never owned an android device, so I'm not entirely sure how it works.

Been thinking about buying an Xperia Play, since I've read that there's a program that will play 720p mkv's with subtitles at full speed on it with hardware acceleration. However, it's a lot of money for a phone.

What I'd like to know, is if there is a free GPS program for it? I saw on the Play.com description that it comes with Google Maps installed, but from what I can tell, you need a data plan for this to work properly, which I don't plan to get. I'd just want wifi only on Pay as you go, since I don't use my phone a lot.

So, essentially I'm just wondering if there is a free alternative, as a free GPS would be a good incentive to buy one, since I could use it in my car too.

Thanks for reading =)

I'm pretty sure you need an active internet connection to use the gps... If your talking about a locally cached map maybe google maps can do that...

Hi my first post on this forum.

There is a free SatNav you can use off-line call NavFree but the maps are a big download.

I know that UK maps are available but don't know if any other areas are available.
So, if you are in the UK & want to try this, Google NavFree.

I did try to post the link but got "We're sorry, but in your first post you can not include links or images. This is to help combat spam. (There are also some keywords that trigger this)"

Bear in mind that the maps are a 300mb download, so best to use wi-fi.
I have this running from a sd card on my phone.
Hope its what you were looking for.

The question to the OP is why do you need this phone? If you just want it for the GPS just get a real GPS which you dont need to pay for data. You cannot get this phone w/o subscribing for a data plan. My ATT has a google gps and it's working fine but I'm using my data plan to use that.

He was considering purchasing a PLAY, and wanted to know if there was an offline GPS program for it, probably so he would't HAVE to get a separate gps device.
