Help Is there a way to disable an App?

Does anyone know if there's a way to stop an app from running without removing it? I want to stop the google messaging app from running while I use Handcent. I force stop it but as soon as I get a message it starts right up again. I would remove it but I didnt see it on the market incase I wanted to use it again.

Just go into the settings of the default messaging app and turn off the notifications.

If using Chomp or Handcent you can also untick "auto retrieve " in the stock messaging app.
