Is there an app for that?

Hi guys...I'm wondering if anyone knows of any apps that would do the following...

I have wifi at home, so I want my phone to only use wifi there. However, at work, there is no wifi, so I'd like it to just be on 3G, and not try to connect to wifi at all. I (like most people I'm sure) have a set work schedule that is the same week to week.

I know Tasker can be 'programmed' to do things like this - but I've never seen an explanation of how Tasker works, so I've never been able to get it to work. Are there any other apps that do this natively? (ie: turn off sound and wifi at 8am, turn both back on at noon, etc)

Or...if anyone knows of directions for Tasker, I'd be happy to be directed to those as well!

So you just want to turn the wifi off to save battery while you're at work? Setting Profiles and locale will do this according to time or gps location(acquired via wifi or gps so one of them would have to be on and get a signal). No program will do exactly the profile you want by default. There isn't a specific app that turns your wifi off at 8am. I haven't used locale but I would say Setting Profile is easier to use than tasker, but there still will be some to learn.

if you just search google for whichever app you decide to use, you will find the developer website and they have guides on how to set things up. Good Luck

thanks, I had been looking for a good free app that did this. settings profile lite is good, but the limitation of the free version is that you can set profiles but you can only have one "automatic" action. So I only have my battery saver profile set to automatic when my battery is low and i can't set the other profiles to be automatic based on time. Timeriffic cant change profiles or do actions based on anything but time so i cant use it

So show the author some support, give up a soda/coffee or two and get the pay version. :) The free version has served its purpose: to let you evaluate it and determine whether it can meet your needs.

How many dollars are we talking here?

i am confused why not just turn wifi off when you want it off

Maybe because I'd prefer something that happened automatically rather than trying to remember when I'm rushing out of the house in the morning?

Seriously, useless snarky remarks are not necessary here. If you don't have anything useful to add, please don't bother replying.

first off i didn't mean to sound like that what i mean is the phone should do this anyway.

I have mine set to not notify of wireless networks and i have it set to connect automatically with my home network so when i leave the house as soon as i am out of range it goes to 3g and when i return home it goes to wifi all auto so again i am confused why do you need an app for this?? am I missing something if i am please forgive me

again i think a setting of not to notify of open networks will achieve what you want without another app to install

Tasker can definitely toggle various apps/settings based on time (as well as location, etc.). I just haven't had time to check it out, but if I was going paid, I'd consider it first just because it appears to be so powerful and extensible.

I've been meaning to score a paid copy, if I do, I'll let you know about WiFi/ring settings based on time :)

Timeriffic (the app mentioned above by sharathk) is free and does EXACTLY what I was looking for. Turns things on and off automatically, based on time, with no further input necessary from me, and really easy to set up. With as much as I have on my mind these days, it's nice to not have to worry about accidentally forgetting to turn off my ringer (and/or wifi).

Hi gang!

Let's see if we can all agree on some simple ideas:

  • the big deal about Android is you can make it yours
    • customize however thru settings or apps
    • use however
  • there's more than one way to do things
    • there's not a right or wrong way - there's your way
    • the other cat's way is right also, for her/him
  • only mods decide who's in line or out of line in posting
    • people get frustrated, words get said
    • this is text - missing is tone of voice, facial expressions, etc
I'm seeing misunderstandings and clarifications, I'm seeing a little confusion, I'm seeing a problem was solved.

People want to do what they want to do with their phones. That's just the way it is.

When things turn sideways, just hit the !Report button, we'll be glad to help - never attack each other, just ignore and report, and only attack the real problems.

Focus on the how, and ask about the why when it helps get to the how.

Thanks, everyone!

I have a friend that uses Tasker on his T-Mobile G2 and he has settings that turn WiFi off and on based on his location. If he is near his home or work, WiFi is on, but if he is not near those two locations, WiFi is off unless he manually turns it on.

I would use Tasker, but you have to have a working aGPS to get the most out of it, so I haven't gotten it. I use Settings Profiles Lite to do more than just turn off and on WiFi. I manually turn on my work profile when I get to work and it turns off WiFi, lowers the ringer volume to zero, and lowers the notification volume to 50%, then at the time I specify the profile turns off and everything returns to what it was before I activated the profile.
