BTW. Unknown Sources translates into: anything other than Google. I was going to make a Windows comparison but I noticed that you are a Mac person........
Frankly free VPNs can be rather limited, slow, servers busy and/or are full of ads. After it does cost real money to run the online servers, so paid VPNs will always be better and more usable.
Chinese govt. knows about most of the free ones, and therefore usually blocks them. Like TOR and Hotspot Shield are unusable in the PRC.

I use Psiphon as my VPN when I need one, but VPN is an additional drain on the phone.

Thanks for your replies! Well I think I've decided I don't really need a VPN and a VPN would probably be exposing me to even more actually...third-party ad networks etc, and what do I need a VPN for anyway? I don't do anything illegal. I pretty much just use the internet to browse websites such as this one and read articles and check email watch some YouTube videos and download from Google Play Store...that's about it really. So do I really need 1?
Like I said the best way to stay secure is to not connect to a public network. At least not if you have state secrets stored in your phone.

lol I don't have any top secrets. Just rather boring stuff. However I do frequently connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots which is why I considered VPN in the first place but I don't know maybe it's not necessary for what I do?
I don't do anything illegal either, I just want to look at Google, Youtube, Facebook or CNN sometimes, as I'm in China. That's why I know about VPNs.
