Help Is this normal behavior for navigating text with Gingerbread?

I just updated to Gingerbread and now I've noticed when I try to edit text in the internet browser, the methods seem to have changed. (I also use Swype, if that matters.)

For example, it used to be that when I double-tapped a word, it would highlight the word and then I could type a new word to replace it. However, now when I double-tap a word, it puts a cursor in the text, but not even on that particular word -- instead, it puts the cursor in the middle of the word BEFORE it, which seems completely arbitrary.

Is this new behavior with Gingerbread? Or something with Swype? It's a lot harder to simply choose a word now. It seems now I have to hold down my finger on a word, then wait a moment, then choose "Select word," and then I can type a new word. A lot of extra steps.....

Android 2.3 did see some changes and upgrades to the way text selection and manipulation is handled. I always thought it seemed better than previous iterations of Android though.

HTC Sense handles text manipulation a bit differently than vanilla Android does. Perhaps, you are just not used to the newer text manipulation paradigms offered by Android 2.3 in conjunction with HTC Sense.

I suppose I'll get used to it, but it was very distracting not to be able to just double-tap to highlight a word. On the other hand, I love the addition of long-pressing to zoom in so I can then move the cursor around precisely. That was always missing from previous versions.

I totally agree. The magnifying glass to precisely select text works great.

It works much better than tapping and tapping again to get the cursor in the exact spot. HTC implemented that very well.
