Help is this normal?

theinvid

Newbie
I'm new to android and the sgs2. (came from i4)

It feels as though my battery drains quickly.
When i go into settings and look at battery info it says...

7h 15min. on battery

Android OS 72%
Display 13%
Voice Calls 4%
Cell Standby 3%
Android System 2%
Phone Idle 2%

I was under the impression that the screen should be the biggest battery sucker.
I have barely used the phone today...and i mean barely.
I'm at 65% battery life left

Just tell me if this is normal or if I'm doing something wrong :)

I do have the phone fairly tweaked out but not rooted.

If you barely use your phone, it's normal that the screen does not drain you battery much...I think what you have is pretty normal.

I hope you are right. It just seemed like the battery drains quickly. I go to sleep at 10pm with 100% and wake up with less than 70% and i had it in a few irplane mode.

ok, tested it last night.
I used a 1910mah battery.

7h 48m on battery
Android OS 91%
Phone idle 3%
Calendar 2%

I started off at 100% and put the phone in airplane mode and woke up with 85% battery.

Yeah, I don't know what battery that is and cannot tell if going down to 85% is what you should expect to happen, but the other stuff seems alright. Maybe somebody else will have a more informed opinion on your battery?

Can't comment about your extended battery (would test with OEM to make sure), but if your phone is in airplane mode and still looses 15% it sounds like something is still using some cpu/data throughout the night. If I turn off data sync but keep cell signal on I lose maybe 4% after 8hrs.

I guess it's also possible your phone isn't calibrated to the larger battery? Have you run through full-charge to dead yet? Android calculates battery % by it's voltage and the different batteries will have different voltage use charts.

If your in airplane mode and its draining that much battery something is not right. I leave my phone on airplane mode for 8 hours when I'm at work and I loose about 5% if that.

hmmm it felt like something was wrong. (compared to my iPhone..I've never had an android phone before)

I have not cycled the 3rd party batteries down to 0% but I get this same phenomenon with the Samsung battery also.

I will test the samsung battery tonight in airplane mode and post my results in the morning.

I appreciate the help and hope that this can be resolved :)

Download CPU Spy and reset the timers before you test. This will at least allow you to see the clock speed of the processor through-out the night. Will help you decide if you have any wakelocks stopping the phone from fully entering deep sleep.

downloaded cpu spy, i will reset the timers before bed with 100% battery on the stock battery and will then put the phone in airplane mode and leave it unplugged.

I'll report my findings in the morning

a little day time usage statistics...
since i unplugged this morning
6hrs 37 minutes
Android OS 74%
Display 12%
Androis System 7%
Cell standby 3%
Phone Idle 2%

battery is now down to 61% at 3:22pm cst

p.s. I have barely used the phone today. couple of text messages and maybe a 2 minute phone call. no music, no video, oh and checked emails twice and deleted some.

With wifi, bluTooth, GPS all turned off. Data is on. Also, using JuiceDefender

Ok, so here are my stats for the day...
Battery down to 58%

12hrs 1m (somebody was up early this morning)
Display 54%
Android OS 16%
Android System 15%
Cell Standby 6%...

I don't use my phone too much, but I did read the news, e-mails, few texts, short phone call...nothing too battery consuming. I have a few basic widgets running, I was on wifi most of the day, bluetooth on, GPS on (used navigation for a few minutes). Anyway, something may seem to be a bit off with your battery. Try your Samsung battery and let us know.

8hr 19m
Android OS 92%
Phone idle 3%

phone at 91%

(this is the best results I've gotten)

CPU SPY
1200 1%
1000 2%
800 4%
500 0%
200 3%
Deep Sleep 88%

I'm not entirely sure why it held a charge much better than before....this particular time.

Only thing I did yesterday that was different was go in to running applications in settings and force stop all the ones i thought were non-essential.

However, that likely wouldn't have done much since I ultimately rebooted the phone when I replaced the battery right?

While it's not horrible results, if you did indeed reset the timers and let the phone sit for 8hrs you do seem to have some sort of wakelock stopping the phone from fully entering deep sleep. Last I ran this test I believe I I was sitting at around 97% deep sleep (with the rest at 200mhz).
Honestly, I'm not entirely sold on Juice Defender. I wonder if that could be your culprit? Would be worth uninstalling and trying again.

You were in airplane mode right? Do you have any other apps set to retrieve data? How about widgets on your home screen? I literally have one screen, and while I realize that may not be feasible or practical for everybody, might be contributing to my battery life...

Yes, I put in a fresh Samsung battery at 100% charge and then immediately reset the clocks in CPU Spy and put the phone in airplane mode.

Admittedly, I have a few widgets running...they are:

WidgetLocker
A beautiful widgets clock/weather
Juice Defender widget
Pandora Widget
Widgetsoid widget
GoFacebookWdiget
GoTwitterWidget
Vlingo widget
Zedge widget
and a widget that shows me missed calls/txts/calendar appts

Hmm, sounds like a lot compared to you...perhaps a lot compared to most?? I came from iPhone and am widget happy i guess

here is what shows up under Running Services:

setttings

go launcher ex notifications

No it is not normal, my phone can last about 40 hours if i barely used it. By barely, i mean really less usage. On a normal usage, like texting, browsing, checking emails, weather and facebook, it can also last about 8-12 hours.

Go to settings>applications, unable 'background data' and 'auto-sync'.
Turn off your data when you dont need to use it.

I had this battery issue too when i first got the phone, i changed the settings above and its fine for me now.

I go through about 10% per hour of barely touching the phone. Wifi OFF, BlueTooth OFF, GPS OFF....the only thing on is the HSDPA+ data connection.

Is it my widgets?
What do you guys think is killing my battery like this....if this isn't normal.

All i know is my battery sucks compared to my iphone4

Why don't you disable the widgets and check what happens again? If the battery holds the charge significantly better, you'll know it's one of the widgets doing it. Also, try without the airplane mode. Sure, battery may get used more, but it's just easier to compare as most of us don't put the phone in the airplane mode.

Yep, it seems to be a widget problem. Ask yourself what you really need out of those and if it's worth the drain. And as suggested, turn them all off and check stats. Then begin turning back on one at a time to find if it's an individual widget issue or just from having so many (all contributing to drain).
