Is this normal??

I have had my Eris for a week or so and am getting concerned about it's reception. I am noticing the bars will fluctuate wildly while sitting at my desk in an area that has great Verizon coverage! I am looking at my Signal Strength and it is flipping from 89 dBm 12 asu to 0 dBm 0 asu without even moving the phone! What is going on?? Do I have a bad device, or is this normal? Thanks for any info.

It's a normal abnormality.

edit: (many people have this issue. it also destroys your battery life at low signal levels)

Ugh... Just dropped yet another call. I'm still within the 30 days, so bye-bye Eris. I just can't get on board with the slide out keyboard on the Droid, so I suppose I'll wait on the Nexus One or something... It sucks, because I really liked everything else about the phone!:(

Yeah, I wouldn't put up with dropped calls either. Fortunately, I haven't dropped any calls. I've only experienced low signal in certain areas that should be good and extremely poor battery life in those places.

I agree that I love everything else about the Eris as well.

I never had problems. Sucks for everyone else, but reception is great.

Not to say this phone is perfect, as we all know it needs improvements, and 2.1 should have been here last month

You may want to see if you can try another Eris out and not effect your 30 days. I have had weird bars on my phone, but I have not dropped calls. Another phone my solve the problem.

Oner of the first things I learned about the Eris, by reading here and other places, is that the battery meter and reception bars are crap and can not be trusted.

My battery meter can be trusted. I've had it shutdown on me a few times. While I agree that the signal strength meter is wacky, the phone still thinks it has to work harder to transmit when it shows 0-1 bar. Luckily I get decent signal at home. There's just a few places I frequent that kill me.

and there is no way to fix this?
earlier my phone had an x over the signal indicator and said looking for service yet my best friend called me and it rung so obviously the indicator lied and i do have signal

and right now the box is grey with no white lines in the signal bar yet i know i have a signal

From what I remember reading (and, sorry, this was back before and just after I got the phone and I don't remember links) one of the updates was supposed to, or going to, fix the innacuracies of the meters.

I just ignore them for the most part, now

Wow. I can't believe how much people bend over backwards to facilitate the short comings of this phone! I'm sorry, but you shouldn't have to shut down 3G just to get through a day of use, or run task killers, or deal with a phone that can't pull in enough signal when you're in a building. Believe me... I love the interface, the size, the web browser, etc; but first and foremost IT's A PHONE, and that's it's weakest point. Maybe the Nexus will be better?? Waitin to see.
