Is this phone really practical?

OK --- I have been using this phone since day two of release. And I am having a lot of fun with it except for one thing -- using it in real time, day-to-day living.

The Nexus is first and foremost a phone. But in that most fundamental way it is almost useless to me because of the battery drain.

After playing with this thing, using and tinkering with every possible energy savings idea I can find --- I suspect you would not be able to go to work in the morning, make a dozen calls and surf the internet for 15 minutes and still have power for the commute home.

If this is true then it begs the question ---- of what practical use is it?

Dont know what people are doing with their phones to drain the battery so fast. I get texts all day long from my answering service, make calls , look up thiings in epocrates and still have about 30% at the end of a 10-12 hour day. Im in an area with pretty good 4g signal though. Maybe that's your problem?

In, my experience, signal strength is generally the cause of bad batteries. I live between two houses and I also travel at least one a month elsewhere so I have a lot of experience with varying signal strength and batteries.

About two years ago, I started just carrying a 2nd battery with me all the time. I only have two actually use it every 2-3 weeks depending on where I am but it makes me secure knowing it is there. You might want to consider this option as I think the GNex is an excellent phone!

If you are using the phone like a crazy device, do what iphone owners do, 100% tether at work because their battery life is much worse.

I've been using the f*ck out of it and I'm usually at 50% at the end of the day.

If I used an iphone like this (not even charging at work), it would be dead by lunch.

I usually leave on wifi, gps, and I will manage bluetooth, that's just a given. I don't disable anything. I also have a ton of sync's going on.

My 4G at the office is 1-2bar, that's common, and I leave 4G on all day.

I'm still on my morning charge, and it's working out great. Not so sure what you kids are doing to kill battery times, but something will flush out soon!

I don't expect my laptop to last all day on its battery.

I would have a hard time believing that the above scenario would play out that way for myself, either. Do you have WiFi at work? Do you have noticeable areas with signal issues? How long are your phone calls, etc? I mean, I'm on WiFi at work, so that helps, but I've still managed to make 7 phone calls, anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes in length, sent out three dozen texts, and other average things, and I'm still at 60%. However, my screen has been on less than other days too. But, I've never had an issue going all day at work regardless of data connection, with average use.

Double check your batter stats, see if there's anything causing high drain. Some people have had Android OS issues, which may be contributing to your own case if you're experiencing far shorter times.

True, it's a phone first. But's a lot more capable than just a basic phone, so I don't expect a three day battery span.

It's a phone, I stay in touch with family, text friends, check the weather, surf for shopping deals, navigate to stores and get emails for work. Seems very practical to me especially since it lasts a full day.

Some people are having battery life issues some are not. Guess you'll just have to play with it find out your sweet spot or return it for something that will satisfy you. gl!

On Topic: I've had to get the extended battery and turn off a bunch of stuff, and buy juice defender ultimate, but I'm squeezing out 20 hours out of it. that is with me playing with it non stop and about 1-2 hours of phone calls a day.

Most iphones are worse, and I got better than that with the standard battery, about to switch back to the standard.

that's at least double.. coming from coworkers with an iphone. There has not been any influx of fruit at work, but it's amazing over the last 2-3 months how many more droids have shown up.

Nothing wrong with the battery, went 12 hours off charger the other day while making a few texts/emsils and calls and got home with 70%. With heavy use im getting 8 hoirs and will still have 20-30%

not so for many people. bug in android os causes high keep awake time with screen off.

I also use my phone all day and the battery doesn't seem to be an issue for me. If battery life is that big of an issue they do make the extended battery, but I don't know how much more that would help you. Also throw a charger in your office, or get a car charger neither of which is extremely impractical.

Yeah, I would charge at work to fight through it. It always seems to get better as the updates come or you discover what it was.

Plus after a while you stop messing with it all day, and it makes a difference.

When you find a phone (or ANY device for that matter) that last for 7 days and it's a smart phone with a 4.65" screen let me know because I think you found a phone from the future.

There is no battery technology that exists that is going to get you 7 days battery life on anything.

It depends what you use the phone for. If you just want a phone to make phone calls then get a dumb phone. That'll last you forever on a single charge.

i've worked in an apple store, i can assure you that a huge number of iphone users would be happy to get 20 hours on a charge. its the case with pretty much all smartphones that they'll need charging each night, you said you got 20 hours off a charge, that's probably about what they are targeting with an modern smartphone.
