Is it neccessary to "unmount sd card" under system settings/storage before I remove the sd card. I've removed it temporarily before without clicking this and haven't noticed any problems.

long as nothing is writing to it at the moment you remove it, no... best practice is to unmount any mounted device (sdcard, thumb drive, hdd, etc) be removing.
