Is Verizon stuck on 4.1.1?

My friend has a Verizon gnex. I know he's 3 updates behind and I'm aware of how laggy vzw is with updates, even on the gnex. He said he read somewhere that vzw is done with nexus devices and he won't upgrade to anything above 4.1.1.

Anyone know what I can tell him? I thought for sure he would get 4.2.1 maybe by January.

Google really got burned by Verizon.

I know how he feels about lack of updates and support but this is one reason why I came back to GSM land after dealing with Verizon... never again.

All I can say is good luck.... it's plausible that there may not be any more updates to the Verizon variant mostly because of Verizon themselves.

I wish my Verizon Nexus owners the best of luck even as I pass on to the Nexus 4 (when I get it that is ;))

Is your friend still under contract? If not, he can simply leave Verizon and get the Nexus 4 and put it on either AT&T or T-mobile. Yes. he will lose LTE, but how attached is your friend to that?

It has been taking Verizon about two months to update the Galaxy Nexus. Based on that schedule, 4.1.2 should be released to Verizon GNex users before Christmas. My guess is that Verizon will skip 4.2, meaning that 4.2.1 should be released in late January (or early February, depending on if the holidays slow down their development process).

My cousin has a rooted Verizon Gnex and he is already running 4.2 (Key Lime Pie) he was ranting about the awesome new features it created and how fast the screens change...i really hope verizon does get their edition of the update before February...;)

4.2 is still Jelly Bean.

Lol...not sure why he refuses to root and get the latest update...thats pretty much his fault, it was well established after the first update that verizon prevented this from being a "true" nexus device.

My cousin had key lime pie and I am interested to know if anyone else has it and is it worth rooting my nexus just to get it

Not everyone has the choice of doing so. I have read on here numerous stories of people who use this phone for their work. It might be against company policy, especially if they have have sensitive information on the device. Unlocking the bootloader and rooting compromises the security of the device and could be a nightmare for their company if the device is lost or stolen. There's a reason Google absolves all responsibility for Google Wallet on rooted devices, you just don't have that extra layer of security.

The is no Key Lime Pie yet at this point in time. The latest entry in the AOSP is 4.2.1, which still falls under the JellyBean codename. Many people thought 4.2 would be Key Lime Pie since it was a whole .1 change over 4.1, but Google decided to keep it JellyBean. This is similar to when Google kept 2.1 as Eclair even though 2.0 was also Eclair.

I have a feeling that the Verizon/Google relationship has gone bad and been severed with the release of the Nexus 4. Due to this, I feel like Verizon will put the gnex on the back burner and take forever to get updates out to the gnex. In the past, verizon has been getting the updates out to the gnex about 3-4 months after their official release.

then he was running that...and he was telling his brother to update it...and i wanted in but im not sure its really worth rooting for...since i am fine with running stock Jelly Bean right now

I expect the VZW Galaxy Nexus to get 4.2 eventually, but it may still be several months away from now.

I have 4.2 on my Nexus 7 though, and in my opinion the new features aren't all that exciting. It's certainly not the big improvement that 4.1 was. Photo Sphere may be neat, but how often are you really going to use it? The sliding keyboard may be nice, but if you really wanted that feature right away, just get SlideIT from the market.

I like that they finally added toggles which is nice on a phone, but I think they're hideous. They look like something straight from Windows Metro. It ruins the elegancy of stock jellybean IMO.

I haven't tried 4.2 on a phone yet (I'm waiting for Peter Alfonso's ROM). But from what I've seen on my Nexus 7, the new toggles are handy in that I don't really need the toggle widget on the desktop anymore. But I'm bothered by the way you open them: Sliding the left side of the status bar opens the notifications, and the right side opens the toggles. I find myself opening the wrong thing occasionally, and I could just imagine how this will confuse the average user.

I love the 2 sides.

Want access to notifications? Pull down on the notifications.

Want access to WiFi/GPS/battery? Pull down where that is displayed on the screen as well.

Its very intuitive to me.

Personally i like Swype Beta, but that is just my opinion...plus the Swiftkey Flow is going to be released soon :)

i just noticed....verizon advertises the Gnex on their site with having "the latest android operating system" does this mean we can sue verizon for False advertising? :)
