Root Is Wipe Data necessary?

texts I have no clue on, contacts sync em with google (your gmail account), wifi passwords emm not sure, I can remember mine lol.

but you could use the app backup feature in rom toolbox, or tibu etc.

I am guessing you are referring to trying the CM9 roms, in which case you should make a backup first, that you can restore after you're done checking CM9 out.

You can attempt to not wipe data, but dont be surprised if it doesnt boot or act weird if it does. ;)

Yes, a full wipe is necessary. Failing to wipe will usually cause lots of issues like FC's and such.

Here are some suggestions on saving various data...

Texts: SMS backup and restore.
Contacts: Google sync.
WiFi passwords: save /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf (or something like that).
App data: Titanium Backup.

contacts are synced with google, SMS/mms things like that can easily be backed up as well
installing roms always require wipes. if you follow things right you will have everything and Cm9 :3

no problem, glad we could help!
keep us updated in case you need help,
or notify us that this is resolved fully =]

well actually no its not, in the particular case in question yes its strongly suggested even by myself.

BUT typically only things that should need wiped is cache and dalvik. But wiping data is usually a fix-it-all for most devs and yes even I tell ppl to do as a last means. Think about it, does a OTA wipe your data??

BUT again case in question yes do a fact reset and wipe dalvik. ;)

Actually dalvik wipe is not strictly necessary for ics and higher. The dalvik cache is verified against the packages at startup and repopulated as necessary.

Cache, certainly. It's a cache after all. Shouldn't be any harm there.

As for data, I've personally seen where data from old system apps is incompatible with new/different ROMs and causes FC's. This could be due to CM/AOKP specific changes, I don't know. And honestly the clock is the only one I've seen. But in any case, I'm sure that this is one of the difficulties that carriers face in doing OTA upgrades that we, as hacker/developers, just avoid by having our users do a full wipe. It would be nice to have a post-install script that wipes system data while leaving app data alone. But it's not a sexy job and it's easy to tell users to use TiBu, so it doesn't get done.

yea usually going from stock to CM I suggest a full wipe to just to avoid issues. Once on CM tho its not required. I too use to alway recommend full wipes til top devs got on to me over it lol.

And I never recommend tibu, personally I dont like it lol.
