Help Isn't tethering backwards?

Is it me or is all this fuss over tethering kinda stupid? It's like making it so you can use your phone's touchscreen keyboard to type on your PC. It's backwards!
If I'm in a wifi area I'm setting my phone to wifi even if the 4g is strong. Why would I wanna run a PC or laptop off of a subpar 4G connection?
Are people in that desperate of a need to get on their tablet or laptop that they have to use their phone as a network connection?
I could understand if you're a super busy business man or a government agent on a mission and in a connection bind, but for the average person it seems a little silly.

Now...is the reason that everybody is goofy for tethering a legitimate one or is it one of those things to do just because you know you can?

Well, you hinted at the problem yourself:.IF you are in an area with strong wifi. But what happens when you're not? I take my laptop with me in various places where wifi is just not an option, so having a backup plan that is somewhat reliable means a lot to me. And depending on the location,4g can be stronger than wifi.

Interesting. A little light has been shed on the subject. Thank you. My main concern is the possible abuse that could overload things and make connections weaker for everybody else...but still my knowledge is minimal and I am still learning.

I often turn on the tethering while in the car so other peoples devices, like an Ipod Touch or a Tablet can connect.

Not all coffee shops have free wifi and those that do are often overloaded by assholes watching hulu so its faster to connect through my phone.
