Help Issue: Dismount/disappearing defect in the Included 8GB MicroSD?

Just to clarify - EVERYONE pays for the EVO. People who registered for Google I/O had to pay either $400 (early bird registration deal) or $500 to attend the event - so yes, even they "paid" for the phone. There was no "freebee" EVO handed out. I'm almost positive the 5000 units came from the same stock as production packaged units. The attendees mostly consisted of tech media and developers so it would be mass suicide to give beta or unfinished units to this crowd that has the power to influence potential customers.

Aaaaand what the hell does this have to do with MicroSD card issues?

His argument refutes the idea that this issue will affect retail units to be sold on the 4th, instead of being limited to just Google I/O units as previously hypothesized.

...and back to your originally scheduled programming!

On a side note, after my roommate updated his hero to 2.1 it gave him the same error when trying to save a picture. I haven't been able to ask him if he's been able to replicate the issue since he's out of town. I wonder if it something within 2.1 that is screwing it over.

Alright gang, here's the latest.

I decided to call the special Google IO tech support line, as found in the documentation (htc.EVOlution has a copy posted somewhere), and that dumped me straight into Sprint Advanced Tech Support (that's how the gal answered the phone). I spoke with a lady named Lisa regarding the SD Card matter, and learned a number of things. Take all of this with a grain of salt, if you're like me and cynical/skeptical of customer representatives.

They were aware of the SD Card issue but have not yet determined a root cause. I explained what has been going on here on Android Forums, and explained all of the experiments I've done so far to test and investigate this issue.

I explained how I had reformatted the card once and it remained stable for about 24 hours, before failing again the other day. I mentioned that I did another reformat last night and I've been stable so far. She asked if she could follow up with me again tomorrow, made note of my number, and will do so, to find out what is going on.

That's about it for now.

If any of you are having issues, I would STRONGLY encourage you to contact the special Tech Support line that was set up for us & report the issue yourself. -> 877-527-8405

Sprint has said this is a software issue with the pre-release EVO's,and ALL the units coming out on the 4th of June have had this software updated and fixed...end of story, hopefully

I hate quoting myself, but days ago I said those phones were pre-production..
I know you purveyors of gloom and doom dont believe ANYTHING ANYONE says to the contrary, but unless you are saddled with a Google I/O phone, shouldnt you just chill on this issue until Friday, to see if Sprint is telling the truth?
Eventually, you have to give people the benefit of the doubt; you just can't be a "doubting Thomas" all your life...

Ummm, they said they gave away 5000. One to each registrant. What difference is it how old they are? If they JUST found the problem in the last week since it was handed out at IO they would still have to fix it NOW so it would still mean calling back half-million or so phones in less than a week. You can also be pretty sure the 5000 they handed out were from the shipping versions. Hmmm, lets give the IO folks the bad ones and save the good ones for the folks who pay.

No matter how you look at it the problem was only discovered AFTER they were distributed so no matter how old they were they would still have to fix ALL the rest of them between then and Friday.

Yes fix them indeed but not have to REPLACE them with new handsets like they would have to do under a 30 day retail exchange agreement. Think about it. My guess is they knew these phones had some flaws thats why they were not shipped to retail markets but given away instead. Im sure HTC will repair the units under warranty but I GUARANTEE you this Sprint or HTC isn't going to give you a brand new one within the first 30 days like you normally would, you will get a rebuilt unit from HTC. This in turn saves HTC from having to replace defective handsets with another brand new one like they would normally have to under the 30 day buyers remorse clause.

Actually, the Sprint rep called me back and corrected herself regarding the Pre-Production statement. The phones going out later this week are the same. Presuming you wish to believe her. *shrug*

Well. I think what I want to believe now is that I will be excited as hell come Friday when the phone is in my hand, and, if it has a issue with the SD card, I will deal with it at that time...
Not gonna let something like this, which is only occurring on a SMALL AMOUNT of the phones to dampen my excitement for it...sorry you are having troubles with yours, but I am not gonna worry about mine until I have it..

Right on!

Well - I'm still going to keep on this, because I'm concerned for the greater good and to cover my own arse since it affects me as well.

I'm REALLY hoping that the issue is in the card itself, and that swapping with my 16gb card will resolve my difficulties. *curses Amazon & USPS for taking their dear sweet time*

I have a 16gb "kodak"brand card I bought from Fry's a few weeks ago for my Incredible.. how can you tell what class card it it?

i guess I will wait until friday to grab this; since I returned my incredible last week to avoid the 30 day etf fee, we have no cell phones in this house until Friday!

Exactly what else can you do at this point. I highly doubt that Sprint or HTC is going to knowingly release bad hardware to consumers knowing how closely the industry is going to watch this launch.

Well, if you have a Google IO Evo now, and are experiencing the issue, I would strongly advocate that you call the Tech Support line that I pointed out. The more who complain, the more attention it will hopefully receive on their end.

I just got back from the local RS, took a buddy who is a big iPhone fan to show him at least the non working demo, when the manager assked if we wanted to see the real thing, I asked him if he had one and he pulled it oout of his front shirt pocket......was I stoked well I got to play with it for quite sometime, my buddy also spent quite abit of time checking it out as well, the downside to all of this was when we tried to take a pic a line stated that there was an issue with the SD card can't remember it word for word but I'm sure it is the same problem that everyone is talking about, So I was talking with my buddy after that to try to get his impression on the phone and he was really impressed he did a couple of tests with both the EVO and his iPhone at the same time and was very happy with the performance of the EVO. He said that the SD card issue could be a deal breaker but he was sure that there should be somekind of fix to that come launch date or shortly there after. This is becoming a concern to me. Of course I will get the 2 phones anyway I am so liking this phone that a liittle issue with the SD card will not deter me from my purchase.
I asked the manager if it was a Google I/O phone he said he got it from the HTC rep.
Has any body figured out the problem yet?
Thanks for all of those who are working on this issue and passing the info to the rest of us, I do appreciate it.

They better get this fixed asap or else selling a million phones with a million returns won't play well. They won't have refurbs or new in stock so the only option is to fix this.

In a weird sort of way, I hope the 8GB cards have to be replaced by 16GB cards because the phone's rejecting 8GB cards on the behalf of us buyers who hoped for 16GB.

I'm less concerned about the card that came with it than whether this issue is consistent with other cards. I just want to know my 16GB card will work.

Am I the only one that is having second thoughts about getting the Evo on Friday because of the sd-card issue? It seems to be a pretty significant problem, but pretty much everyone still seems super excited for Friday. Are we all just going on the assumption that this is something that will get fixed ASAP and won't be a long-term permanent issue? I really want to get the EVO and love it, so I hope everything gets cleared up/fixed soon. If there isn't more definitive information on a possible fix by Friday, is it a good idea to delay purchasing it?

Yep I think so! I really don't care because I already have a 16GB sd card that I am using with my hero, and used with my droid eris, and shouldn't see that issue. From what I understand its the one's that shipped with the phone. So NOPE no second thoughts here!

Well, folks, shit just hit the fan for me.

Update 6/1/2010
:
I have terrible news. While on vacation in France (and therefore unable to swap out the SD card for another), I have today spent a whole day in Monaco and Monte Carlo which ended up being my favorite little places in all of France and its surroundings.

After taking a myriad of breathtaking and irreplaceable pictures and videos and coming home, I found none of them were present on the card. Instead, a LOST.DIR with about 2GB of data. The defect described here, which until now only needed a reboot to get fixed, has now progressed into something that I don’t think I’ll be able to recover from.

Needless to say, this is highly upsetting – these pictures are not replaceable. If anyone has any tips on restoring data from a corrupted SD card, please let me know.

That really sucks, sorry dude.

I'm glad that you are at least able to bring attention to the issue with your informative website.

Try these guys, http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/certification/demand-proof/
not cheap, but considered the best. I tried using them one time when an SD card was physically cracked. They were extremely professional and knowledgeable, although ultimately, the card was too badly damaged. There was no charge, but the estimate was $390. I would have gladly paid to have it fixed. Sounds like you may be in the same situation.

They will give a free estimate over the phone as well. Hope it helps.

So just another update to add to the list of "maybe this fixed it". I have been running with a new 16 GB card for 48 hours now and have not seen the problem. I was seeing it several times a day, on the last day, before I replaced the card.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the update! Is it a Class 2 card?
