Help Issues tethering HP G60-120US

I have a rooted Precedent. I am able to use Barnacle to make a connection and my boyfriend is able to connect to it using his G2. The issue I'm having is I cannot connect my laptop to the connection. It sees the connection (it is an ad-hoc connection), but fails to connect to it when I try. Tried updating the driver on my card, that didn't work. Any ideas? Is it possible to tether using USB? If so, how do I do that?

There are a few things you can do, to tether using usb, u need an app called PDANet and to get your laptop to connect using wifi tether (get 3.1) you need to change the profile to samsung fascinate, then enable encryption the default pass is abcdefghijlm i belive, i would change that, then enable access control, those three things should enable infrastructure mode and your laptop to connect and work. Some laptop wifi cannot work in ad-hoc mode, neither will a wii, but a ps3 and xbox 360 will work, i have used ad-hoc mode to watch netflix on my ps3 while my inet was out, worked GREAT, my phone actually has a MUCH higher burst speed in my area, almost 10MB/s on a good day, but i can also see the tower from my living room, its about 150ft from my house. hope this helps :)

I have a rooted Precedent. I only tether with a usb cable. PdaNet was easy to setup and use. :) PdaNet also says it works with Bluetooth. The PdaNet ad says that a phone does not need to be rooted to work.

Here is what I did. Downloaded free PdaNet 3.02 from the market. Installed free PdaNet drivers on Windows computer (need the drivers to tether).

When you need to tether via USB, first set the phone to debug mode. Easy to do. Here is the path: home > settings > applications > development - then click on "USB debugging" so the green check mark comes up in the USB debugging box. Don't forget to uncheck (turn off) USB debugging after your tethering session is completed.

Start the PdaNet app on your phone. After the app opens, click "Enable USB Tether." (If you forgot to turn on USB debugging, the app will tell you to do it.)

After connecting the USB cable to your phone, PdaNet will pop up on your computer (shortcut on task bar of Windows) and connect to your phone Internet network. (If for some reason, PdaNet does pop up a window saying it is connected, just click on the PdaNet shortcut on the computer task bar and click on "connect.")

Then you can surf the net, check your e-mail, etc. It is not complicated, but I went into a lot of detail just in case you are new to Android.

The one important drawback to using the free PdaNet rather than the paid Pro version, is the free PdaNet will not allow you to connect to secure web sites (Google Mail, Android Market, etc.). After trying PdaNet for a week, I bought the Pro version which is $15.95 and includes permanent updates. Don't freak out at the price there are other less expensive options.

I only occasionally need to tether. It is work related when I do and I need to access a secure web site. It was easier for me to just pay the $16 bucks and get my work done than to take the time to find a cheaper alternative.

There are a bunch other tethering apps on the market which cost less and may work very well for you. You might want to play around with the free PdaNet version and then try some of the other tethering apps to find the cheapest workable option for you.

Please give me a thanks, if this helped. :D

Thanks, I'm installed PDANet and it's working great. I'll stick with usb tethering, I usually always have a usb cord with me, anyway. Any suggestions for totally free all-access usb tethering apps?

PDANet has a 30 day use then you have to pay for it, i use wifi_tether-3.1beta6 haven't have any problems other than having to reboot my phone inorder to re enable the wifi tethering if i shut it off.

Good to know, does wifi_tether-3.1beta6 enable usb tethering? Or will it create an infrastructure wireless network (as opposed to ad-hoc)?

I use a app called wireless tether its free, and I dont need to use a usb. I can connect with my hp and so can friends with there laptops. works great I love it and its free

Forgot to post an update, I did install wireless tether, changed the profile to Samsung Fascinate, and am now able to easily connect my laptop wirelessly! Thanks, everyone!
