Help Issues with Recovery

So my messaging app crashed and force closed, and now all my texting history is gone. I want it back, so I was going to try to restore from a backup.

After booting into recovery mode, I choose "recovery," the phone flashes to the white screen with htc logo in green on it, and then displays a black screen with a picture of a phone with an exclamation mark in a triangle icon overlapping it. I then have to pull the battery to get it to do anything.

Never done this before and I'm a bit of an Android newb, so I feel like I'm probably missing something stupid. Any ideas...?

Found a pic of the icon. I'm running stock.

edit: If I push volume up+power from that screen, I get to the "HTC production" menu (?). It displays "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" and then has four menu items: reboot system now, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition.

Argh.
