Root Issues with Rooting System

Bought my Evo V 4G last year, rooted it, everything was fine but lost 4G earlier this year - around May I think. Didn't really mind that, kept using the phone until about a week ago, when suddenly found myself stuck on the VM screen - unsuccessful at a reset. So, found a ROM that includes the update from VM earlier this year - Great! 4G is back working and coverage has significantly improved in my area. However, even though the ROM was supposed to be rooted, I am not. Bootloader is unlocked, SU has been flashed, no root using Titanium. Booted back into the Bootloader, loaded, came up with missing PGIMG86 files, about 5 of them. Tried to flash a few PGIMG86 files, either got wrong CID or something else. Does a file with this name need to be in the SD root all the time? Tried to flash RUU to start all over from the beginning, was successfully flashed, but booted to the exact same system I had before the flash - did not revert to original ROM. Also tried to flash SuperSU.

Enough said, I have the ROM I want, but just needed it rooted. The only reason I want this rooted is to use Titanium - to remove bloatware and make backups from time to time. I'm wondering it there is something wrong with TWRP, which I did try to update as well.

4th down, time to punt. Sorry if this has been covered. With Googling I've been taken to no less that a dozen sites for answers and countless links to files that have been removed. Any ideas of what I need to try next?

Yes Superuser is there. I had also downloaded a root-checker app and it also indicated I was not rooted.

Thanks.

No I didn't. The RUU seemed to be advertised as "doing all the work". Can I clear davlik now or do I need to flash again and clear after that?

I'm confused
If you ran ruu you should be stock Rom and stock recovery.
If you flashed a recovery, then flashed a version of superuser, you should wipe dalvik and cache.

That should work and yes you should be able to just wipe now.

If that doesent work then we will need to find a different version of superuser or supersu

If nothing works, I would suggest wiping all partitions and flashing fresh Rom. Most come with superuser and no further work is required.

What Rom is your phone running now?

The ROM I flashed a week ago was VM_ICS_2.95.652.5710RD_DEODEX_3-24.zip, and before that I cleared all cache and formatted the phone, the system partition, not the SD card. I flashed a RUU two days ago and it did nothing.

Since the RUU did nothing, I'm still on the ROM I flashed two weeks ago - VM_ICS_2.95.652.5710RD_DEODEX_3-24.zip.

I have flashed three different versions of SU so to speak - the binary only file (since I had SU in my app list) - no go. I flashed the full SU file from recovery, no go. I flashed SuperSU from recovery, still no root.

As I mentioned earlier, it seems like fastboot is looking for about 5 or six PCIMG86 files on my SD card. Is there a root dependency on these files that fastboot is unable to find? If it helps, I know there is s-on and s-off. Not sure which one I am, but I haven't made any attempt to do whatever that is, so however the phone comes that's what I am.

Oh, and I could not run the RUU from within Windows so I did the %temp% trick and copied the ROM image and flashed it from recovery.

Okay, so last night I went into recovery, cleared all cache, formatted everything except the SD card, and reinstalled the aforementioned VM ICS build. No root. SuperSU was in the app drawer, but got message that SU binary not installed. I used ES file explorer to look in system/bin and SU was not there. I unzipped the VM ICS installer zip and found SU and BusyBox in a folder names xbin. I copied the SU from there and put in system/bin. It displayed there with a little arrow in the corner of the icon, like in Windows this would indicate a shortcut. Reboot, no root. Updated SuperSU from the market and installed. Same error message. Went to SuperSU site and got the flashable zip and installed that from recovery - cleared cache and rebooted. No root. Installed SuperUser from the market and rebooted. No root. That's where I am today.

So, from a checklist standpoint, what makes a phone fully rooted? I thought it was just unlocking the bootloader and installing a pre-rooted ROM. Like I said, I have been rooted before, so I have fastboot and TWRP. I confirmed in fastboot that I am S-ON.

Interesting
The pg86img files its 'not finding' in fastboot is normal. It'll do that unless you have one on the root of your card.

I don't think you can flash a pg86img unless you're s off, but I could be wrong.

It sounds like you're doing everything like you should, however I would suggest install 4ext recovery and enable smartflash because you're s on.

I assume you have hboot 1.58 and that is why you couldn't run ruu, there is not one for that hboot, if you want to run ruu you would need to s off and downgrade your hboot first.

Do you mind sending a link to the Rom you flashed?

In the meantime try flashing 4ext recovery or a different Rom, and see if you get root access

Thanks for the help. I was able to flash the Harmonia ROM and all seems well. I did have an issue flashing from TWRP where I could not use WiFi or 4G. Neither would start. I followed the advice of another forum member to use 4EXT to flash, which I did. Everything is working.

I don't think you can flash a pg86img unless you're s off, but I could be wrong.

You can if it's official/signed by HTC. Hence S-on users being able to use PG86IMG.zip version of the RUU. (Upgrade only of course).

But HTC doesn't package and sign just the bootloader for example, so only S-off users could use a PG86IMG.zip to modify the bootloader or a radio as those aren't signed by HTC, people package those themselves. I've done several, pulled from the RUU, they are officially from HTC but my zips aren't signed.
