Issues with videos of the same format (audio but black screen)

I have been having problems with some wmv and mp4 videos (both formats the desire supports).

Some files of these types play back fine, but a good amount of others play with a black screen!

Anyone else have this issue? Some videos are HD others are not, this does not seem to be a factor.

I have tried resizing some wmv's to see if that would make a difference, but it didn't.

Whats the best / fastest etc open source / free / paid application that can convert different types of video into format / resolution that is compatible with the desire? I would be interested in something that I can queue up files and leave it running overnight etc

I head 'handbrake' mentioned alot.. can this have wmv and mp4 as input?

See, there are many different ways of encodeing an mp4. You have 1 encoding method for audio and 1 for video.

Yes, use handbrake OR Play videos on RockPlayer Base.

Thats what I thought..

I guess I want a resolution as close to the desire resolution as possible (taking into account ratios etc).. of the formats you can convert into with handbrake which one is recommended for the desire for quality and compatibility?.. what do you guys use..

• File format: MP4 and MKV
• Video: MPEG-4, H.264, or Theora
• Audio: AAC, CoreAudio AAC (OS X Only), MP3, or Vorbis. AC-3 pass-through, DTS pass-thorugh (MKV only)

Are all these options compatable?

I don't actually convert videos for the desire, But I would use File format MP4, H.264, AAC which I assume should work fine. Although that would be my personal preference.

I doubt DTS is compatible, but I could be wrong.

So with that in mind, I had better leave this to someone else to answer

update : resolution turned out to have nothing to do with it.. encoding in H.264 produces the same result (black screen when playing), however encoding in mpeg-4 (FFmpeg) works.

so H.264 is not supported?
