it driving me nuts

Newbie
I have a couple of things first can the phone not charge when its powered off? Second and its small but its driving me nuts when you look I. The screen above the Motorola there that ear piece reciever and then two the right are two led indicators the one along the side I found is for notifications like text but the one on the top I can't figure out what it does it hasn't to do something because the screen protector is cut for it. My third question why is it when I get an email I get the notification I press on it takes me to message but then still shows I have an email notification so when I press it again takes me to inbox. Is that normal because its so annoying

Next time please paragraph lol. For your first question, it can charge when off. The thing above the led is a proximity sensor not an led. It turn the screen off when your talking. For me it goes away once you open the mail but to make it go away just pull down the notifications and press clear.

Light sensor? What does that mean?
When you have your face next to it, it blocks light to the sensor, making it go dark/unresponsive during a call so you don't press buttons by accident. Also, when you have the brightness in auto mode, it raises/lowers the brightness level depending on the amount of light inside/outside.

I just tried covering both (in case I was covering the wrong one) and nothing happened to the display. However, when I am using it actively, I see the display darken and lighten noticeably. Perhaps I should get this unit checked out for defects?

This effect, coupled with the purplish nav keys at the bottom, as well as my inability to pair with my desktop computer, suggest that maybe I really should, even though this is obviously a newer unit....

No, that's how it's supposed to work. It darkens completely when in a call only, and when you have the automatic brightness enabled (find it in sound and display settings) it dims the backlight when it's dark (covered) and turns it up when it's bright (light shining on sensor).

Cool that good to know. It was driving me nuts not knowing what it did. Thank you. You wouldn't know or have any suggestions bout the other two things would?

The display getting darker and lighter is the light sensor working. As you move in to a darker area the screen will get darker because it does not need to be a bright in a dark area. As you move in to a lighter area the screen will become more bright as it is harder to see the screen in an area with more light. Long story short, this is not a defect. :)

Not sure about your connectivity issue because I have not read about it but there are several threads about this type of issue.

Purple nav keys? My light up is that what you mean?

Not sure about the email thing, do you have another notification app installed? If not, I'm not sure because my LED stops blinking after I view the email. I also figured out what the other dot by the LED is for. That's actually the light sensor to automatically change brightness, and the one on the left side is an infrared emitter/sensor to determine whether your face is next to it while in a call. I just figured that out too, I was wondering myself.

My keyboard backlight is yellowy-blue-greenish, btw. It's odd looking, but I don't mind.

The light sensor is not what controls the screen turning off during a phone call.
Blazingwolf described the light sensor perfectly.
The proximity sensor is what turns the screen on and off during a phone call. All it does is mainly "see" if your face is up against the screen or not.

When I placed my finger over the sensor nothing happens. Also, the light was definitely not changing when I was using it I was stationary, in the exact same spot, and it would just get bright and dimmer. I'll double test, though, b/c it may have been affected by rays of direct light, which I didn't consider.

As for the purple nav keys, take a look at http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/16276-my-bottom-buttons-slightly-purple.html - I am not the only one experiencing this.

My Physical KB backlights are also this weird yellowish-aqua color....I don't use it so am just no noticing it.

Hmm - and the OS must be programmed to check the proximity sensor when placing calls....if I place my finger near it / on it, nothing happens when I am in normal desktop mode.

No no other app and it not that the light keeps blinking just the icon in the status bar doesn't go away. I will click it and it takes me to message I read it then the icon still there so click again and second time takes me to inbox where it shows I read it but that when the icon goes away

The auto-brightness feature doesn't work all that well imo. I turned it off and use the power control widget to mess with brightness. The proximity sensor would be pretty terrible if it activated while not in a call, especially while typing on the keyboard since your hands are in that general area.

Also, I think you might have to be in the inbox for it to realize you've read the email. I'll check next time I get an email.

Hmm, I'll look into turning off hte auto brightness - I turn it off on my laptop as well, that ambient light sensor just plain sucks.

As for the proximity sensor, yeah, my point exactly.

Yep, the email icon stays there until you go back to the inbox. I think it refreshes the new email count once you go to the inbox, which then removes the icon once it hits 0.

Yeah if I just delete when I go to message it goes away I'm just bad bout deleting well def seeing lots of different from the mytouch I was using
