Help It has water damage?!?!?

Well I had a HTC desire back in Feb. It was ok, except kept turning itself off after the taking photo's sometimes. A few weeks ago I plugged it in to charge and it came up with cannot locate sim. Took it off charge, was fine, then it just started to get worse with cannot locate sim all the time and turning itself off now and again.

I sent it to HTC last Wednesday and today theu have said that it has water damage and do not repair water damage and will be sending it back to me. How can it have water damage, I've never had it in water????

What can I do now?

It may be a bit late, but turn it off and put it in a box of rice for a day or so.

You may have inadvertently splashed it or it's been in a very humid room? It's mega sensitive by all accounts.
