Nyce18702

Newbie
This is a step by step guide to gain "Root Access" and Install Ported Android 2.2 Froyo RC1 Build on Samsung Transform. Follow the guide CAREFULLY and STEP BY STEP and you will have a Samsung Transform Rooted WTH 2.2 FROYO!!!! If you dont follow these steps CORRECTLY you can BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!!! With that being said LETS BEGIN!How to Root Samsung Transform

Warning

FLASHING CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!
This is the first time I've done anything with Android, and figured others like me may need a guide to flashing. This guide is only to be used with the files linked to here using the Samsung Transform. Using other files and programs can and has bricked phones.

Instructions

1. Download and install the SW Updater (86,252 KB). This will require you to reboot your computer after it is installed.
2. Download the Kernel/Recovery file (10,390 KB).
3. Navigate to c:\Program Files\Samsung Electronic\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary and delete EVERYTHING inside of this folder.
Note that in 64bit versions of Windows, you need to be in c:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung Electronic\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary

WARNING: LEAVING ANYTHING IN THIS FOLDER AT THIS STEP CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE!

4. Move kernel_recovery.tar to c:\Program Files\Samsung Electronic\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary

WARNING: UNZIPPING THE .tar FILE CAN AND WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE! ONCE THE FILE IS IN THE Binary FOLDER DO NOT TOUCH IT!

5. Run SWUpgrade and verify that the version number is 1.0.001 in the title bar. Any other version will come up with an error. This happened to me my first time through.
6. Follow all instructions in SW Upgrade, substituting the End key with the phone's Power key.
7. Your phone will now have Vampirefo's recovery and kernel! AND ROOT ACCESS!!!

NOW ON TO THE FROYO!!!!!!

Note: Backup your data with Titanium Backup, sync your contacts (or export them to the sd card) FIRST!!!! This process WILL ERASE all of your apps and settings. You will have a scratch phone!!

Recovery: recovery.rfs
Kernel: vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip
Froyo RC1: FroyoRC1.zip

1. After BACKING UP YOUR DATA and REBOOTING your phone, connect your Transform to your computer and enable USB Storage.

2. On the SDCard, create a directory called "sdx" with three sub-folders: "zip", "updates", and "backup".

3. Download the recovery.rfs and vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip files listed above

4. Download The Froyo rc1 build

5. Copy recovery.rfs to the update sub-folder on the sdcard.

6. Copy vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip and FroyoRC1.zip to the zip sub-folder on the sdcard.

7. Unmount the USB storage. Turn the phone off. Disconnect the USB cable. Press VOLUME DOWN, VOICE DIAL KEY, and POWER (in that order) and hold them until the phone turns on. The phone should start up and come up in recovery mode. The background will say "Transform E.R". Reconnect the USB cable to conserve power, but you must disconnect it before you can power into recovery.

8. Use the volume down key to select "Backup, Restore, Flash". Press the Menu soft key to select it.

9. Select "Backup both". Press the Menu soft key to select it, then press the Home to confirm. This backup will help if you mess up, or want to return to Android 2.1. It takes about 3 minutes to finish.

10. Now under the same "Backup, Restore, Flash" menu, use the Volume Down key and move to "Flash (recovery.rfs)". Press the Menu key to select and the Home key to confirm. This only takes a minute or so to complete. It tells you to restart the phone afterward.

11. Use the back key to return to the main recovery menu. Select "Reboot options" with the Menu key. Use the Volume Down key to select "Reboot to Recovery" and press Menu to confirm. The phone will immediately restart.

12. Use the Volume Down key and select "Go To Console". Press the menu key to select.

13. Open the keyboard and press the Enter key. Type "rfs" (without the quotes, just the letters r f and s). Press enter. The phone will say some things about formating files. This takes about a minute. It will say "format successful" three times when done.

14. Type "exit" (again, no quotes, just e x i and t). Press enter. Close the keyboard.

15. Use the Volume Down key to select "Apply zip from SD Card". Press Menu soft key to select.

16. Select the "FroyoRC1.zip" file. Press the Menu soft key to select and Home soft key to confirm. This takes up to five minutes to complete. It will say a restart is needed, But Don't restart yet.

17. Press the back key and use the menu key to get back to the "Apply zip from SD Card" menu.

18. Now select the "vampirefo_2.2_kernel.zip" file. Press the Menu soft key to select and Home soft key to confirm. This takes just over a minute. It will say a restart is needed.

19. Use the back key and go to the main recovery menu. Select "Reboot options" with the menu key.

20. Now select "Reboot to System". and wait. This takes up to 5 minutes to load with no sense of time until completion. First you will see an apple disolve into dust then a twirling red android symbol.

Once it loads you are now the proud owner of Android 2.2 Froyo RC1 Build Tranform!

Congratulations. The first things you want to test is the phone's data connection by looking for the 3g symbol and opening the market or browser. If it doesn't come up, restart the phone. It should restart in under a minute (mine takes 38 seconds at last count).

Credit goes to VAMPIREFO (Recovery, Kernel, Port) & ZRMXP85 (Vampirefo's port with keyboard layout supplied by zrmxp85.)

Thanks for posting this. You should warn people that the front facing camera does not work with this build though. It was created off the intercept froyo build. Still good to see that this is moving along for the transforms!

The builds 'Froyo2' through now (And probably all the next Froyo Transform ports) are based off the Samsung Captivate, and not the intercept.

Not sure if im reading you correctly, but if ur saying this build i have here is from captive ur wrong. Its ported from the samsung intercept. If thts not what u mean please elaborate further. Thanx

Nyce, good tut man. One question, you don't talk about formatting the SD card with an EXT2 or Ext4. Don't you need it for Apps2SD?

I stand corrected. 'Froyo2' through now, has been ported from the Acclaim. The first Froyo port from the Intercept gave you an insanely smaller look because the Intercept has a smaller screen than the Transform. Also, if you want to try to prove me wrong, message Vampirefo on SDX Dev. and tell me what he says... Or you could also just read what he has posted in the 'froyo' thread on SDX, aswell. Believe me, I keep up to date as I can on whats happening in the Transform community so I can help everyone here on Phandroid with anything they need.

NYCE, awesome instructions. I'm working on doing this right now, but the kernel/recovery file in step 2 is no longer available for download. What now?

I should have been more specific, it was the kernel/recovery file for rooting, not Froyo that is missing. I'm not sure if it makes a difference which file I use for this step, but I don't want to brick my phone.

It was taken down, but wwjoshdew has reposted the file again. It's on the last page of the SDX thread.

WOW!!!! How did my port become ZRMXP85's?, Are you sure about that? news to me. I don't come here much, but after getting several emails that my port was now ZRMXP85 thought I would see for myself. ZRMXP85 pulled the keyboard file from an older version, so by swapping the keyboard layout my port became his?.

So if I change the tire on your car, the car becomes mine?:cool:

Haha I got your back Vampirefo, check out my explanation right here

Your wrong, the rc1 build i have included here was built from the ported version from intercept. i only used vamps recovery and kernel.

The RC1 build just includes a keyboard bug fix from a user (Who's name is hard to remember) which was edited from I believe 'Froyo3' which is indeed Vampirefo's everything here is basically Vampirefo's, and I'd replace the RC link with the 'Froyo4' since the keyboard fix is included in that build plus other improments and fixes....... Also make sure you edit this as more fixes are released! That way we arn't downloading old news haha.

I would like to see this guide either changed or taken down period, I am only human this is my project I did all the labor on it, asked for help over and over. At some point zrmxp85 pulled the keyboard layout from 2.1 then all of sudden all my hard work became his port this is BS.

My port is also being used on the moment, but on that port the dev is really doing hard work on it so it is truly a separate port, however according to your post all I have to do once the dev does all the work is change the keyboard layout then that port is my port again, crazy, simply crazy.

Hell I don't have to ever dev again I will just let others do all the work, make one change and take their work, take this guide down from here and other places you posted or change it.

Vampirefo's port with keyboard layout supplied by zrmxp85.

How would like to do all the work I done, just to find out someone else is getting credit for it?

Newb weighing in here, so take it what it's worth. Anyone who follows this guide (Like I'm attempting to do) must go to the SDX site and get the SWUpdater. Anyone who does this and does any research before possibly bricking their phone will see the whole history of this build on the SDX site. From the initial port where everything is tiny and tons of bugs to the final masterpiece, it is very evident that Vampirefo is the main brain behind this project.

As an old retired guy who has gotten plenty of credit for doing wonderful things in my career and watched other people get credit for my work at times, I can honestly say it all works out in the end. Also, the people who really understand the genius of your work will know where the credit goes.

This is my first smartphone and I have been following the 2.2 development very closely. I was content to wait for the official Sprint version because 2.1 is good enough for me. After watching this build develop, I am going to install it. I have taken the time and done the work to feel I can probably not muck it up. I know the credit goes to Vampirefo and some others at SDX. I think it's awesome that there is a group of mad scientists doing what Sprint should be doing on their own for their peers. You guys are ROCKSTARS and Vampirefo is James Hetfield. (old guy Metallica reference)

Don't worry Vampirefo, I'm one of the most active members here at the Phandroid Transform forums, and I've been busy correcting everyone about your work, trust me, there won't be any more confusion, you have my word.

Thanks to everyone that contributed to this. I was able to flash it to froyo but the keyboard mapping doesn't match the transform exactly. Anyway to remap it correctly?

If you look up top i gave you complete credit for the recovery kernel and port vamp. I only gave zrmxp85 crebit for the "RC1 bulid" cuz its the one i used cuz they said it was most stable. No disrespect. If you let me know what you want changed in my post i will do it for you right away
