Think I read in a thread on here that you need to have radio s-off in order to root in GB... will have a look to see if I can find the comment and link to it/quote it in here for you. :)

edit - I may have been wrong about needing radio s-off!

Think I just found it...was a comment in a thread I started when I had problems downgrading prior to rooting (http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-...0-dhd-downgrading-before-rooting-problem.html)

If you get the GB update soon there is a way to root it (think it's called Gingerbreak) and then you can do what you're wanting anyway?

Just a little glimmer of hope for you if all else fails :)

If you search for gingerbreaking on google, I think you should find what you're looking for...

Just had a quick look...

[26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

May (or may not) help you... I rooted from an old version of stock firmware - I'm new to all of this myself and am sure that other (more experienced) people may be able to offer more advice. I suggest you read as much as possible about rooting before going for it - always the best thing to do!!

D-U-R-X is right. The most important step you can do is to research. Read and re-read is all that I can say.

Just had another look at this... you do need S-Off in order to gingerbreak

[26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

it says so part way down that link... don't know if temp root is the same as gingerbreak though - think gingerbreak is full rooting. Could always do that and then go back to a stock rom - if you go back to a carrier rom though, I'm not sure if it would then put the bloatware back on your phone!

Edit - I've just read in another thread on here that you can onlt get TEMP root on GB if you have S-On, so it shouldn't matter to you!!

If you want perm root in GB the you need S-OFF before upgrading to GB otherwise you can only get temp root, Temp and perm rooting are both done with Gingerbreak.
