Better processor, better UI, more memory, Android 2.2 and support for further updates, etc. I agree that those that have rooted and tweaked their Droids may not see much reason to change, but the reality is that while these people may represent a larger and very active segment of the members of forums like this, they represent a small percentage of the overall buyers. For people that don't mod their phones or that want to move from other phones to an Android phone with a physical keyboard, the Droid 2 definitely seems a significant step forward from the Droid. Since it is an evolutionary product it probably won't sell like the Incredible or X, but there's a lot of the Droid and Droid X in the Droid 2 so the development costs were probably much lower and it probably doesn't need to sell in anything like those quantities to be profitable. It does not really look like any significant upgrade from my rooted droid other than the keypad? I think these are going to be dead at the store. Even unrooted the gain is pretty minimal unless you really have to have basically the same phone you had before (droid).
I simply don't think that this phone is aimed at getting Droid 1 users to upgrade. I think it's aimed at people who held off on getting a Droid 1 because of the keyboard and/or the processor that's behind the times.
Incidentally, those are the only two reasons I haven't rushed out to buy a Droid 1, so I'm probably going to get this at launch.
I would have to disagree, I don't think most people even cared about the processor when it was released. Also the Droid was the faster Android phone out at the time.
And now it's not. The Droid 1 was the most powerful Android on the market for about two months before the Nexus One came out, and now the market is almost saturated with gigahertz-processor phones. The Droid was incredibly popular, and Verizon obviously wants to keep selling them, but in order to do that the phone needs to keep up with the Joneses.
I have a feeling that a 1GHz processor will be obsolete by the time Verizon offers something with all the other items listed.i hope a android phone with a full qwerty keyboard front facing camera 8megapixel plus dual flash 4.3 inch display 1ghz processor an i hope its a htc phone running android 3.0 gingerbread
its the same phone looks the same just different keyboard an internal i still have the first one. i don't think ill be upgrading to a droid 2 naw i rather wait till christmas time to see whats coming out. i hope a android phone with a full qwerty keyboard front facing camera 8megapixel plus dual flash 4.3 inch display 1ghz processor an i hope its a htc phone running android 3.0 gingerbread

I also have to wonder how many people will buy high end 3G phones after LTE is rolled out. It will apparently be some time before LTE phones are available, so do you buy a new phone like that noted here in November or December or do you wait until LTE phones start appearing? Pure conjecture but I can see the possibility of no new upper tier smartphones being introduced between the time LTE is officially launched and when LTE phones become available.
hmmm that a good point but i read an article that metropcs will skip 3g to LTE later this year an they already have phones in the making with samsung i think LTE is going to be the next big thing.

the D2 has a keyboard, the X does not.

Am I the only one that wants a Faster phone? Everyone says it is not worth it to upgrade, it's the same phone... I must be the only one who thinks the D1 is slow as F*** even over clocked and running Froyo. I can't wait for the faster processor and more memory upgrade. That alone has me sold. I hope the D2 has better hardware though... Clicking screen, broken power/volume buttons is getting very old...
Just for the record. More megapixles has nothing to do with the quality of the camera. 5 is more than enough. the Marketers are doing their jobs if you are buying into all that B.S
Dx is nice too, but I think it is too big but all depends on each person. If they came out with a 4inch screen like the Samsung vibrant, I would be sold on that, awesome phone by the way. I wouldn't buy the Dx until Froyo is offered on it though. I went to try it out in the store and I thought it was very laggy. Froyo should fix that right up.
Really disappointed that it'll have blur crap... I just want Android, and nothing covering it up. One thing I wonder though, is if it'll have the encrypted boot loader like the X. If it does, that'll turn me off to it even more.
I guess the overall impression I'm getting from the Droid 2 is that it's a kinda half-assed pseudo-upgrade for the Droid.
I don't really see it as half-assed. It addressed people's main complaints with the original Droid. The keyboard is phenomenal and the processor is equal to that of the X. They kept the same look but has improved software.
What does the d-pad have that the directional keys don't?
How about I put a skin of Windows 95 on top of my Windows 7 machine and call it improved? LOLAre you referring to Froyo as software? Just want to be clear. Obviously Blur doesn't increase the speed of the phone, but Froyo (the OS) does, versus a phone still on 2.1.So the new software increases the speed of the phone, it's features, and the overall functionality/smoothness of the phone, but it's not an improvement?
