JB - It's here. Official.

does anyone know how OTAs work? is it by the phone's geolocation or something? for example, i'm in the US, what if i bought an international S3 that just so happened to be a Poland version, would i be getting the OTA right now? =P

Yes you would. Doesnt matter where you are, what matters is the phone's version / country.

I hope the US versions will be able to download through kies instead of waiting for Verizon or att to do an ota update.

Newb over here. So with OTA JB update (when its available in my area). Does it wipe the entire phone, and you have to restore your backup? or will it just update your phone, and all your previous settings and installed software are still there.

OTA are non-destructive updates.

I have Sprint in the USA..and the phone downloaded an OTA update today....but I don't think it's JB. Still at 4.04...but it acted like a big update...with multiple restarts. What was it...anyone know?

I have Sprint too, in California, no update here

Whatever this update was...it has caused my battery to drain faster just since this morning. My battery would normally be around 93% now (11AM EST USA) but now it is at 70%. I will be PISSED if this stupid OTA update causes my battery to drain faster...up till now I wasn't too upset.

What was this update I just got if not JB?

Anyone?

Its not JB as the Android version would be 4.1.1.

There have been a few ICS updates from Samsung since it was launched and this must have been one of them.

My guess - and I'm probably wrong - is that Samsung are releasing what they hope is the final release to a smaller user base to tease out any last minute bugs they may have missed.

Then they would release a fixed version to a larger base such as the UK following up with a small update for Poland etc to fix any bugs.

So let me get this straight. If I want to upgrade in the US I need to:

1. install samsung usb drivers (which I think already work)
2. download ROM from links off of xda.
3. install Odin
4. do funky button combo to get phone into load mode.
5. start odin
6. plug phone into computer
7. flash .tar file onto phone via the PDA area of Odin.
8. reboot and pray.

BigHAZE,

It should have added a few features like display brightness slider in the menu pull down and some other stuff. I personally think they are patches to get ready for the larger update as well.

Or wait for your carrier to release it OTA.

The only official ROM (stable) is the one released in Poland. It's for the GT-I9300, so if you have it, then yes. If you have any US variants, do not attempt to do it, it won't work and it will mess the phone up.

That about sums it up. Just watch out that you dont dowload a pre rooted rom from XDA. They can only be flashed if you've an unlucked bootloader.

edit
* important: this works provided you have the international version of the s3. Dont do all this if you dont have the i9300 as it will screw up your phone.

I have the US Verizon version SCH-I535. Going to keep researching because the last OTA update made my phone really buggy. Applications just decide to crash and it has not been as stable as it should be.

I was just going to get the official release from Poland and that should not be preRooted. Kinda confused if the international version of software is going to work on US branded phone. time to go read read read. any advice or links would be great.

As I mentioned (too late, apologies) in the edit on my previous post: Do not, I repeat, do not, flash international firmware on a US s3. It will screw up your device.

Everything is the same for me except you seem to have a more up to date Kernel. My Kernel looks like it updated last on July 18, yours is on September 7. Also, my Baseband/Buildnumber is the same except the end is not VPALI3, but VPALG8.

How's your battery life? Mine was pretty good..but I have already noticed with this "update", that I am losing juice faster.

They better hurry up and give us the official OTA JB!!

Sounds like you need to root and get that poland jellybean download instead ;)

us sprint users got the notification slider bar out the box, well i had it out of the box, its patches for sms/mms/LTE tests and such (reported to be small). there was a thread on xda about it. he is actually running the latest update even with weird dates. others have reported better battery life. gearing up for jb!!!!

also this update is chronological by esn or state, not everyone is getting it at once as im waiting to see when ill get mine, still on lg8

Officall JB and benchmark test with quadrant standard.

Enjoy.

Oh look. Another useless "Jellybean is here" / "When will jellybean be here" thread. Two pages of absolutely no actual information on anything, unless you're in Poland.
