Root JB Or Cm For S-on

If you are going to try the wire trick your best bet is to flash the VM RUU, then htcdev unlock and root the stock ROM.

The flashable rooted stock ROM's are linked from the OP of http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/560846-rom-evo-v-4g-stock-rom-deodex-odex.html.

Just follow the instructions on this page and if you can't get the wire trick to go check out the troubleshooting section for JuopunutBear. I also have some tips and references for the wire trick near the end of the OP for my rooting and S-OFF guide.

I'm on Windows 8
Well, since you are already breaking the unlimited.io rules by flashing the stock ROM instead of the RUU, just right click controlbear.exe and run as administrator and you should see a "*32" next to it in the task manager meaning that it is running in 32 bit mode. Just make sure you can get your phone's serial number by using "adb devices" and if not check out http://androidforums.com/5421194-post3.html for how to install the drivers on Windows 8.

You are running out of excuses and will have to do the wire trick sooner or later. ;)

I know brian706 has a post with the stock hboots on this forum, but I'm used to linking this post which has links to some background information on bootloaders as well as the actual hboots, along with instructions on how to flash them. I recommend ENG 1.04 if you use 4EXT or JBear 1.50.5050 if you use TWRP2 (touch). Both work fine with the GB and AOSP based ROM's.
