Help JB update is killing me

this i realize, and it is depressing. however, if it comes down to it i'll just have to go back to my bberry unless i find a phone that still supports ums...that is unless my firm compliance gets up to speed on cloud tech sooner rather than later. btw, i would NEVER buy a toy like an iphone, worst of them all...IMHO of course.

Goodness gracious...isn't that throwing out the baby with the bath water? It's not like MTP vs UMS is night and day different, is it? And calling IPhone as a toy is a bit harsh. It's a fine phone for those who don't want to tinker with every possible option. But if it's that important, then I guess you don't have much of a choice. Sell it on Craig's list and try to recoup as much as you can for it.

Instead of mass storage, I use the media transfer protocol and have access to both the internal and removable SD card. I can drag and drop files like I used to. I don't see the big issue. Yeah that dumb "not compatible" warning pops up, but just click through it. Its a limitation, but one I can live with. Mass storage device is pretty much disabled on all Jelly Bean devices. Its OS not hardware related. is it that important? Id rather carry around an extra thumbdrive than switch phones because of that function... especially a BB.

Oh, I forgot to mention, there was another thread (or was it this one) that allowed you to go back to ICS (require root). So you could go back to ICS, that's another option, I suppose.

That is great! do you have windows 7 or xp? ive read elsewhere that win7 pc will do just what you described. and i don't have win7. even level 3 tech from moto was remote in my computer and phone at the same time, hooked usb, and could not get files to transfer using mtp??? argh!! anyway, they have an xp machine in repair and are to call me back when they have tested the rmhd with their xp pc. if i can get files to drag/drop thru mtp, that will definitely suffice (and i dont mean media files). i'm doing a FDR today, btw.

After JB update...what happened to:
Mass Storage Device, silent mode, notification light, among others

I have to get UMS mass storage back or i'm out $250 plus another 22 months on my contract.

If you bought a BMW and they changed it out with a Nissan, wouldn't you be pissed?

Maybe not if they changed out my 328i with a GTR... 8^)
(sorry, just had to throw in a little car humor there)

Are you sure you have a good cable? I tried three generic ones in a row and the SD (built-in and external) were not recognized. I tried the cable that I got with my Droid and it worked. Only difference was the cable.

It is the best method to do a factory data reset after updating your software, and i dont know much about the razr hd but i do know with the galaxy nexus when you root you have to unlock the bootloader and that deletes your entire sd card partition. I do not know what it does to the razr hd.

budfox have you tried applying a different driver for the razr?
http://www.batakang.com/ftp/DROID_RAZR_HD/DROID_RAZR_HD_Utility1.00.zip
this download includes a utility to root
but it also includes a razr hd driver. try installing that driver and see if you can transfer files that way.

Guys lets attack the issue not each other ok?

If the user does not want to Factory Data Reset then that is his entitlement.

good news!!!! i located a windows 7 machine and the drag/drop ums works, without driver files, on mtp and debug settings on. i need to upgrade to a win7 computer at work anyway. also, i did a FDR which was time consuming reloading everything and still haven't synced my contacts yet, but it did clear up some glitches with the JB update. it did NOT fix/allow drag/drop/ums on my win xp pc, so win 7 is a must. only thing left at this point is to find out why hdmi crashes all the time when plugged into the tv, and when it works very grainy now on tv compared to the phone view. that did not clear up and worked great with ics. any help there would be nice. Thanks for the patience and help in resolving the deal breaker, ums/dragndrop.

Wow ... that's great news.

(Perhaps a little off subject ... since you didn't update to Windows 7 in your office yet you might want to consider going to Windows 8 instead. That might save you another upgrade in the future.)

I've tried windows 8, I hate it.

If you're going to consider windows 8, try it out first to see if you like it. It might be better to stick to windows 7 - kind of like how people did with Windows xp when vista came out.

This is a very good point. I had my phone die wile on a trip last August. Verizon told me the cable/charger that came with the phone had died and sold me a new one. It charged as needed but would also NOT transfer data. There is a separate data transfer cable for that.

While they look identical, they are not.

try the driver i listed above and see if it works, you do know how to install a third party driver after one has been installed right? if not let me know!

Hi guys,

My MAXX HD updated to JB this week, and I just noticed the differences when I plug it in. I've followed this thread, but I'm missing something. How do I get to the rest of the internal card's storage? When I plug it in and choose to brows files, all I see are the DCIM and Pictures folders. How to get to the rest of the files, such as Downloads etc.?

I've tried picking other Autoplay options in Windows 7... no joy.

Sorry if I'm being dense. I'm clearly missing something.

Marc

EDIT: I checked in Settings... Storage and found the three dot settings menu in there, and selected USB Computer Connection. Turns out the phone was set to PTP instead of MTP. Setting it to MTP cleared it up and I can transfer files just dandy. Annoying warning about the file not necessarily being readable, but that's cosmetic.
In ICS, when you plugged into a PC, there was a notifier icon that you could choose to set the mode, wasn't there (PTP/MTP/UMS)? Annoying that it doesn't come up in JB...

Anyway, sorry for posting my own personal fire drill. Maybe this will help someone.

How do I do an FDR?

im not sure i am following what your problem is, cant you explain a little better?

normally after many OTA updates you need to factory data reset to make the OS run better.

say you have a blanket, it is covered with all kinds of stuff, food, clothes, use car parts etc. imagine if you get a new blanket and put it over top of that old blanket. you will still have bumps that need to be smoothed out, but imagine if you took everything off of it, it will lay flat once more. same concept different things. try a factory data reset and it may help clear up some issues, if not let us know.

Glad you got this figured out. I did not know this was not available in WinXP as I don't have access to one anymore. Hope you are enjoying the phone again!

Agreed

Honestly having to do a Factory Reset after a update is pretty lame, I've owned a lot of phones and never have had to do that with one yet.

Pretty dumb to have to do that for an update, I understand it happens sometimes but still a pretty big hassle for some users.

I updated two of my Windows 7 to Windows 8 on the day it was released. I invested $120 and thought it would be a great opportunity to learn the new system.

After two months of frustration, I just finished rolling Windows 7 back into both of my systems. In my opinion, Windows 8 may be good for touch screen tablets, but it isn't ready for prime time on MY system.
