Jelly Bean...Can't Wait!!!

I am watching the live stream of Google I/O and OMG Jelly Bean is AWESOME!!! Anyone else watching? I can't believe that this is just a point release and not a major OS update. It is amazing.....can't wait for that ROM to drop for our phones. Open Source to go public in mid July they just announced with the SDK available immediately.

I am definitely ordering the Nexus7 Tablet which will launch with JB.

Did anyone else catch the new Android 4.1 feature allowing app purchases to be specified down to the individual device? There was a positive reaction from the developers in the audience. This may mean the end of buy once, run on multiple devices though I suspect it will be a case-by-case decision by the developer.

I think it's extremely impressive. Naturally I'll reserve judgement until I try it for myself. Keynotes have a way of showcasing features in a way they'll never actually work for the masses!

I really like the look of the Nexus 7 tablet, it will probably be a bit more expensive when it comes to the UK but I'm due a new ebook reader so this will do for me... just got to convince my missus now lol.

I've just bought a One X so I am expecting I'll get jellybean but probably a couple of months after launch, I don't mind waiting cos I still think ICS is a great bit of software.

I ordered mine today. Went with the 16gb because there is no MicroSD slot. I've been waiting for this device to come about. I thought about waiting for Asus to come up with something that would be in the same price range, but I'm thinking that Google will make sure this gets the next OS updates without having to wait for a third party vendor, so this should make sure we always get the latest updates. (fingers crossed)

The most impressive thing, honestly for me was Project Butter. I'm so tired of Android getting laggy at time despite the killer hardware. If they truly solved the random pauses and laggy issues, I will be one step closer to dropping the iPhone.

The offline voice function looks great and I like the Siri-like demo with the prime minister of Japan.

The notifications look baller.

Overall it looks good. BUT....

this now means the Samsung Galaxy S3 already outdated. We all know that Jelly Bean has to be optimized with Touchwiz and will likely be updated sometime next year. That is if the Galaxy S3 will even be getting Jelly Bean. This is just really piss poor planning on Google & Samsung's part. Why release this so close to the Jelly Bean update? I feel like this is the little green robot giving the finger to everybody who just got the S3. Now the geek solution to all this is, "Just root it." But, that's not good enough for the average consumer.

Deep down in my heart, I hope that Google gave Samsung a heads-up on Jelly Bean and their engineers are on it and will totally prove me wrong. Out of all the companies, Samsung has done the most to propel Android to the forefront, the galaxy line really has become mainstream and has the best chance to be a real rival to the iPhone.

This is the continuing problem of Android. The existing devices are not updated or supported in a timely manner. It feels like my devices are obsolete within three months of purchase. My Galaxy Tab 7 plus was only available for sale in Canada in about March of this year. Samsung has promised to upgrade it to ICS which has already been out close to 9 months. If my galaxy tab 7 + ever gets upgraded, it will already be superseded by Jelly Bean and using an OS that will be close to a year old.

I applaud google for continuing to innovate (or at least keep up with the competition), but having to wait more than six months for an OS update to a current device is really unacceptable. The whole system is really geared towards pushing consumers to buy and replace their devices every six months instead of getting full value out of their current device.

Another point. Samsung may be the leader in Android sales for now, but I expect that Google will probably give preferential treatment to its Motorola division in the future. There really is no loyalty either to the consumer or its partners.

Google is supposedly handling the updates of all android 4.1 devices.

This problem will be gone within 2 years

Jelly Bean.. shoot, I still haven't seen Ice Cream Sandwich(ics) on my device yet.

Nonetheless, I love the way Google is moving forward. ✔

Exactly. The mobile world moves fast, but nowhere near as fast as Android. The conspiracy theorist side of me thinks this is why handset companies love Android. The disorderly way they push out OS updates, if at all, combined with the manic speed they bring out major updates- twice a year makes handsets obsolete. Which leads to increased sales. HTC can put out 2 top end phones in a year, but if the difference is that the new one is slightly faster, there's no need to upgrade and the new phone sales blow. Now if the second phone has the next OS and you're still waiting for the current OS update with no word on if its even coming to your phone, now the consumer has an incentive to upgrade. I don't even care if the S3 has a dual core processor and the next phone in a few months has a quad-core processor. That's expected. But come on- keep the updates timely here.

This is so true- this is why the business end of it is so messed up. This just pisses me off. Really. I was livid with the Droid when it took me several months to get Donut or Eclair or whatever it was while it seemed like only the "new handsets" get the update. And this is how Google is rapidly gaining market share. 2 major OS updates a year, plus new handsets with the new updates, while blocking out the current Android users, drums up sales and market share. You can bitch all you want about Apple, but this is just as nasty.

Yeah... well with my experience with my Droid and Galaxy Tab, unless you are Larry Page chilling at home with your next-gen chromebook, I'll believe it when I see it. And if you are Larry Page, can you send me a S3 with Jelly Bean? :D

The problem is that you have other ordure inbetween - manufacturer overlays like Sense and Touchwiz (which generally go deeper than just skins, despite how they are often described) plus networks adding their bloat. Each of these is a delay in getting an update out. That's the downside of Google letting their customers modify the software: they don't control the rollout of updates.

Google have stated an ambition to reduce this, but without a major change to the model I'm not sure how they'll do it. If you want to be sure of rapid updates right now I'd say the options are (a) buy a Nexus branded device, or (b) root and use custom ROMs (which are released much faster than manufacturer/network updates). Neither of these suits everybody though.

According to the front page of Google Play at the moment, it's priced at

It's not as bad now. As far as I recall, 2010 saw Gingerbread, 2011 saw Ice Cream Sandwich (Honeycomb doesn't really count since it was tablet-only), and now 2012 we get Jelly Bean. Granted, things were pretty messy before.

Unfortunately, new Android versions are getting announced just a couple of months after new devices started shipping with ICS and usually several months before older devices get updated (if they even get updated). Carriers exacerbate the problem even further. Something needs to be done to avoid all these.

Just glad I've already received ICS on most my phones (2011 Xperia/LwW and Nexus S). Also happy to learn that the Nexus S is getting Jelly Bean. :)

only thing I look forward to is hopful while all the app n game makers make upgrades to support jellybean, they will fix the problems with ICS.

really want one, but can't say I have a huge need for one....

If it had an sd card slot, I'd be more likely to get one....

I may wait and see if they become cheaper on the second hand market etc..... :-(

I think the main thing that it will help is with devices that the app is known to not run on. We've all seen apps where the dev will put in the description "Is NOT supported on Device X". Then you'll see a 1 star comment that says, "FAIL!!!! I TRIED IT ON MY DEVICE X AND IT DOES NOT WORK. FAIL!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD. HORRIBLE APP. WOULD NOT WORK AT ALL ON MY DEVICE X"

I interpreted that feature to mean that if you bought an app to work on one of your phones, it will not work on a different phone (even though you are using the same gmail account). This would be good for developers because consumers would have to pay for the app a second time to work on a new phone. Not so good for the consumer who wants the latest OS by replacing phone every six months instead of waiting for a year for manufacturer to update.
