Help Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide

Hello !
Finally jb is here for xeu :)

Right! Before I started the update I moved all the apps from usb/ sd card back to the phone. I then did a full backup to my laptop. I then removed the micro sd card and rebooted my phone. I then did a factory reset with usb wipe to clear everything and ive now started the update.

My question is when the update is complete and I put the micro sd card back in my phone will it find all the pictures and music that is stored on the sd card or will I have to take them off the card via my laptop clear the card and then put the pictures and music back on through the phone?

Sorry if this has been asked before ive read that much on here lately my head hurts!

Many thanx

Well I updated to jb 4.1.2 put my micro sd card back in and everything works perfectly its like a new phone again :-)

Thank you, thank you. its only jolly well worked.

One more question, will i still be able to synchronize with Outlook?

Congratulations fox27! :congrats:

I can't see why you shouldn't be able to sync with Outlook. Personally I use MyPhoneExplorer to sync to Office Outlook.

Congratulations zoonie! :congrats:

I would have recommended formatting the SD card and re-installing afresh... just to be on the safe side, especially if you had any app's on it.

cheers, saw that but wondered if any point doing a reset after as well?

No point if you have done a, "vanilla", install as it is all wiped beforehand. Just check after flashing that everything is OK before loading your phone up as this will eliminate the possibility of corrupt updates.

If I do OTA update are the installation files cleaned up or do I need to delete them?

IMHO, I would avoid OTA, (Over The Air), firmware updates wherever possible as they are the least safest method of updating and the possibility of a corrupt download is greatly enhanced.

OTA went well. can't see any installation files left over but I guess thyey may be hidden somewhere?

Apologies in advance if I am posting in the wrong thread, but my problem relates to upgrading to JB and I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. I upgraded my S2 a couple of hours ago with the official Samsung JB firmware via Kies after first resetting to factory defaults and wiping the SD storage. Everything worked perfectly until I followed the recommendation to calibrate the battery which I did in line with the procedure to charge to 100% , remove they battery for 180 seconds, the refit the battery and switch on. My phone however now hangs at the message "Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I 9100" and will not respond to any buttons. I have reconnected it to my pc but it is not recognised by Kies. Can anyone advise me how I can overcome this problem? I have a micro USB jig that I bought some time ago which will, according to the spec, put the phone into download mode, on the basis that it might be needed one day, but I have never used it and am not sure whether it would be wise in this situation.

Hello and wecome to Android Forums bobbywollh! :)

Sorry to learn you are having problems after updating.

1. Try rebooting your phone with the external SD card removed to see if that helps.

2. Failing that, try a soft reset and failing that, a hard reset, as described in Hawker's post, here.

3. If all else fails, boot into Recovery mode and select Factory Reset.

Hope this helps.

Hello, sorry if I'm posting to the wrong thread but can anyone tell me if it is possible to upgrade to jelly bean 4.1.2 from 2.3.4 baseband version I9100XXKG1? Im confused with all those versions of this phone and Im stuck in this woeful android version! Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks ironass, the last option to enter recovery and do a factory reset has saved the day. Where would we be without the internet, forums such as this one, and helpful experienced contributors like yourself. Once again, many thanks for your help.
Regards
Bob

That depends on your CSC code for your phone. See #1.1 for detailed, step-by-step instructions on locating your CSC code and checking to see if you are eligible for JB.

I have a sim free Samsung Galaxy S2 and on connecting to Kies it says new firmware is available:

PDA:LPT/PHONE:LQ6/CSC:LPA(XEU)

Please can you advise if this is the Jellybean update? I am in the UK

No... that is July 2012's update to ICS, Android 4.0.4.

Jelly Bean has been released for CSC code XEU, as per post #2.

Thanks for quick reply that is strange as I am already running ICS 4.0.4 and in settings it says I9100XXLQ6.
Do you know why I am not being offered the JB update and can you advise what the firmware version will say in Kies?

Hello!

I've seen that JB has now been released for XEU. I remember someone (probably ironass!) said that XEU and CPW are often released at the same time. I'm on CPW! Would anyone like to make a guess how long I may have to wait to see JB for CPW?

I was just about to install an LSS release but I don't mind waiting a few days if I can get the official one for my phone.

TIA

Honest answer... Nobody knows. I am disappointed that it was not released simultaneously with XEU, as happened on ICS. As I mentioned in an earlier post, here, the Galaxy S2 is now at end of life and some carriers may never upgrade to JB.

You could try contacting Carphonewarehouse and see if they can tell you... one way or another.

Thanks ironass, that's a very useful answer. I think I'll go for a XEU update, but I'll check with Carphonewarehouse and I'll let everyone know if I get any intel.

Cheers!

The battery drains very fast after the update ! :( , with ICS I was able to use the phone for 1.5 days. now its like 10 -15 hours!

Update on Jelly Bean releases so far

Four months after the official release of Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.2, for the SGSII and over half of all the CSC codes in post #2 have now been updated to JB. In fact, some of these individual CSC codes have now received as many as 5 separate JB updates to give them the latest version of JB. See, #1.9.

Of those CSC codes yet to receive the update to JB, by far the biggest proportion are carrier branded firmware and are the responsibility of the carriers to update. Since the SGSII is now over 2 years old and at its EoL, (End of Life), these carriers may decide to not to spend the time, money and effort on JB support for the SGSII and prefer instead to concentrate on the newer models such as SGS4, SGS3, Note, etc: See #1.8 and #3.6.

So, what do you do if JB has not been released yet for your CSC code?

1. You can, as per #3.6, contact your carrier directly and see if they have any plans for releasing JB for your phone, as Samsung will have sent them the stock, Samsung, JB firmwares over the last 6-8 months and will only be awaiting their return with the added carrier, "bloatware", for release, should those carriers decide to support JB. For non carrier, unbranded, firmware you can contact Samsung who may be waiting for the OK from a country's telecommunications authority before being allowed to release their firmware. Certain Middle Eastern countries are notoriously slow in granting such permissions, for instance.

2. You can flash any of the stock Samsung firmware releases so far for your model of phone and language pack, see #1.1, (all firmwares contain the English language), by carefully reading and following the step-by-step instructions and video in the link in #1.7. Please take the time to read posts #1, #2 and #3 first as they will answer a lot of your questions.

3. Root your phone by carefully reading and following the step-by-step instructions and videos in posts #1 and #2 of the Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide and install any of the custom ROM's, (firmware), that are available for the SGSII, including JB, 4.2.2 or the very popular NEAT ROM. If you have any questions about rooting or custom ROM's, see the, "All Things Root", section of the forum.

The choice... is yours!
